home made roof rack

here are pics of my home made roof rack:
specs:

3mm steel 30x30 square tubing for outside frame, 20X50 tubing for platform, front runner mounts.
i had the corners bent for a place close to zwartkops raceway, cant remember the name.
the whole roof rack weighs quite a bit (about 35kg) but it is really really strong, ive overloaded the roof quite a bit before and its held out really well. i have the alluminium clips hook and rails to tie down all the good.
on future overlanding trips i will keep the weight as low on the roof as possible.

i really didnt have much welding experience before the roofrack but if you dont try then you will never know, the end result is so much more the just a roofrack, its a personal art and a real experience.

Sven,

Well done on a very neat project!!! I do like the size of the rack as it is not to big.

Maybe the current manufacturers have to look out for you.....

Don't worry about the weight issue Sven  :)

A Steel Roof rack has a FAR greater load carrying capacity than an Aluminium one :D

Also benefits from greater rigidity and longevity :D

PLUS - Lord forbid - will give you an unmistakable Audible Warning before failing (unlike the Ali version)

NICE JOB, NICE THREAD

Thanks Sven :D

Rich

It turned out very nice Sven  Particularly since you say you've had little welding experience! (3mm wall is a lot more forgiving than 1.2mm, but also a lot stronger). A neat finish and a job to be proud of, Well done!

I have a set that I had made out of 5mm Stainless that I no longer need. I have 4 with rail clamps and 2 others that I never got around to finishing. Make me an offer?

Man, l have to admit, you are really talented if that was your first time constructing this as a first-time welder. Some talents are hidden within us and we will never know them till we have the zeal to make them show off. How long did it take u to construct it? :shock2:

https://cad.onshape.com/documents/b7a32 ... 4985c9aa20

There's the CAD for mine

The two bend radii are a bit arbitrary and came from a hand drawing I imported, 45 and 45 would work fine too They are also way overkill strengthwise but then again, they'll never break.

Has anyone had cab leaking issues with these gutter type mounts?

No, my cab leaked from under the vent panel below the windscreen and from the rust holes in the A pillars at the seam between the pillar and the roof on both sides. The welds there are always a weak point on the older Hiluxes

I think it's just my worn out door seals because there isn't any major rust near the gutters or roof

Is the water pooling in the footwells?

Yeah. And the seat got wet and there was droplets on the window and along the door. This is the first time I've had it happen and coincidentally it's after I fitted my roof rack. I think the brackets are causing water to flow over the gutters and my worn door seals are allowing it into thr cab. It's only on the front passenger side tho

You should be able to get new seal rubber in the same profile from ProAuto Rubber.
