Dust prevention - bin

Post by gotalovethebush »

Hey guys.

Anyone got good ideas on how to keep dust out the bin of a Bakki? After a recent trip to NC, my stuff was covered in dust.. Even my poor fridge... Sob Sob. I tried to seal most of my diy canopy and openings with that black foam, but seems the most comes through the tailgate and?? I'm presuming this happens in a double cab as well.
Thanks

What work well for me is to leave the slide window open about a 1cm.This causes positive pressure and keep the dust out.
My previous fibre glass canopy was leaking when it rained  but had limited dust with the window slightly open.
If you dont have a slide window you can also use this

You can seal as much as you like, but unless you have a 100% air tight seal dust will come in. The only way to keep dust out is to create positive pressure inside the canopy. Open the front slider window if you have one, or fit a forward facing vent that catches air and forces it into the canopy as you drive. We have been doing this for many many years, over many 1000's of km's of dirt roads, and it works for us. This positive pressure also keeps the back end of the bakkie relatively dust free...

What I learned this holiday is even if you have an air vent or something that create + pressure at high speed, it helps zilts if you are cruising at 30 or 40km/h in soft powder dust or if the wind is blowing from behind. So even though you have an air vent or something it is still good to seal the back
Most dust come in at tail gate

See pic below, it clearly shows the two biggest problem areas.

I'm looking at making an concertina effect triangles to fit between the tail gate and bak. Then also put a piece of canvas along the length of the tailgate, just like frontrunner's system. A friend of mine has done it and it cuts it down to nearly zero dust while driving slowly.

I was digging round on the internet for a bracket for an ostrich wing awning and came across an advert on OLX saying that they were going back into production. I rang them and spoke to karen and it sounds like big country are taking over again but the factory is going to be in PTA and the office in joburg or something! but to get back on topic when she sent me the costs for the bracket she included the list of items they are selling off at reduced prices - and on the list was a dust proofing kit - for the IFS Hilux for only R250 and the Vigo kits are R400. They are currently still in the premises in marlboro - right by the toyota offices, but are moving out come month end. Had lots of other bits availabe for their roofracks and other kit! Cant seem to attach the excel file to this though, so let me know if you want it.

That explains why Richard had to search for another Vigo dust proofing kit! He managed to find the pile of them in another part of the warehouse though

Has anyone tried sealing the bin with silicone completely and then just using a carpet knive to make a single cut throughout the silicone so it seals properly each time?

I have that Frontrunner Dust kit in my Vigo and it works a charm. I have over the last two years very little dust in the bin

According to the guys at 4x4 Megaworld Bryanston there is a hole in each of the corners of the load bin under the lip where you see the small blue light if you plug those holes with a dense sponge your dust problems should be solved. I have not been back on the dirt roads since then but try it Image
