DIY Roof Rack

Post by WayneSchalk »

So after I got the Frontrunner rails fitted, and paid quite a bit (R600) for the 4 brackets that attaches the rack to the rails, I can now begin my build.

I don't intend on loading a lot on the roof, it will accommodate the 2 jerry cans for diesel and maybe a 40lt water tank. And the odd item that does not find a spot at the back.

BUT :!: If the measurements allows I will be integrating my solar panel in the rack, on a couple of alu hinges and a gas shock that flips it open on a bit of an angle

The aluminum and the rest of the material has arrived so I just need to get a few bits at the hardware. That's the plan for the weekend and I should finish up on Saturday is all goes well :yahoo:

Very neatly done!

What material did you use for the frame? And the corner braces / screws?

I've been toying with the idea to build one myself, but welding ali is a stumbling block. Getting a good balance between weight and strength would be one of my proirity issues (another would be low / no maintenance). To get a good balance depends on materials and design. A decent timber satisfies the weight vs strength requirements pretty well but it falls down on maintenance requirements. I tend to try avoid creating unnecessary maintenance issues and when it comes to RR's, I would like to fit it and not have to worry about it again, so wood in my book it's a poor material. The convenience, relative cost and ease of working with wood does make it an attractive option though, so I can easily understand your choice, but I think I would rather go with galvanised steel, using lighter profiles but trying to improve strength through design. ;-)

Dit lyk goed Wayne,

Watter connectors het jy gebruik? Ek sien nie connect it blokkies nie.

I used 2mm alu square tube, so the Connect-it blocks does not fit on the tubes, what I did is use 76mm x 3mm alu flat bar to brace the frame, and on top galvanized 90 degree and t pieces (i think used in cabinet making). The alu cost R575.00

The wood was donated to me :siffler: HEHEHE, my toppie bought it in Zambia about 15 years ago, it was stored in his garage and never found a purpose

SS screws and bits was R100

The Frontrunner rails I got as trade for a roll bar, R300 to fit

And the Frontrunner brackets was R600

So total R1575, all that needs to be done is get a good polyurethane varnish

Danie for your requirement if the tent stays on permanently, I would consider using mild steel and just to a frame to support the tent. Not a full roof rack.

I weigh 120kg and would say I will get onto the rack I built no problem. But 400kg :silent:
