Inverter Welder

Post by louis fourie »

Go for the 200A ..... won't work as hard / longer duty cycle, and it's a bit more capable. (Some of the 200A units allow for a TIG attachment, although it won't be a very versatile TIG welder). For the small extra outlay, it's worth it in the long run. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

As hy so 2 jaar hou sal ek tevrede wees.

Matweld might not be the top of the heap, but they're not too far off IMO. Have had one myself for a good number of years (also 200A) and it"s done more than a fair share of work.

as has already been mention, brand here is not so important!! as electronics are pretty reliable nowdays!!
its similar to when TVs were around, brand did not mater much, as inside many shares a common set of components!!

when getting a DC inverter welder, one also needs to get a decent Auto-darkening helmet
as I learned
with the old oil bath welder, when aiming and striking before helmet was down was bad
however when doing that with the DC inverter welder, it became BAD on the eyes!!
after the 3rd time, dropped every thing and went and got an auto darkening helmet and not looked back since

my one has more then payed for itself!!

I've used the auto-darkening helmets for a long time now. So much better! ...... Same as the inverters by comparison to the old oil bath welders. I have two Tonco oil bath welders and a few welding hoods just gathering dust.

All still better (and lighter)than this .....

Also been using the auto darkening helmet and what a joy it is compared to the older versions.

A tip I was given by someone in the steel industry is to make sure to use the correct darkness of lens for your helmet. The higher the Amps the darker the lens need to be.

According to him the easiest and quickest way to know if your lens is dark enough for the amps you're welding is to do a short test weld and then look up at something different and if you still see the "white flash" (blind spot kind off) then the lens is not dark enough

My helmet has two adjustment knobbies ..... one sets the sensitivity (how fast it reacts to different intensities of light, i.e. how bright the spark of a strike), and the other for how dark you want it. It can be set so sensitive that a single spark from a chip-hammer sets it off. The darkness settings allow for use as dull as gas welding / brazing or as bright as TIG welding, or any intensity in between. It doesn't use batteries either, but is powered by photo-electric cells and capacitor, so you never have to worry about being let down by flat batteries.

Best welding accessory I ever bought.

Had a big welding job, decided to retire the old Tonco oil welder... After 10 years it's got more oil on the outside than inside. Got the 200a matweld. Now I do not have to tie it down on the back of my bakkie coz it has no oil to run out when it falls over and I do not have to strain my back carrying the darn thing around either! And my welding does not begin to look like a mess after 10 minute's worth of welding because of an overheating Tonco! In fact, I feel like quite a pro, with flux falling off by itself!
Ps- I worked the cost of the new boy into my quote
