Anti Theft Device

Post by Black Sam »

Due to the theft of mainly Fortuners and Hiluxes and the way they disable the alarm, and the high cost of installing different devices I came up with this idea and it works for me.

1. Move the "alarm" (hooter) to a unreachable place. I mounted mine next to the radiator.
2. Install a device that will trigger the alarm as soon as they try to open the bonnet from the side to disable the alarm, in this case I used a micro switch bought from 4x4direct, and it works perfectly.
3. a Slight lift on the bonnet and it triggers the alarm.

All I need to do now is to put a sticker there saying: "You are wasting your time"

Daai kan goed werk. Jy moet nou nog net 'n kleiner fuse agter jou flikker lig in sit dat hulle daai fuse blaas en nie die ander nie

Nishan the micro switch has only two wires, one goes to earth and the other to the door switch that is connected to the alarm of the vehicle.

My Lux is in for panel beating at the moment from all my hail damage and also the bonnet damage from when they tried to steal it.
I had already thought of doing something like this as soon as I get it back, thanks Gerrie, you just helped with which switch to get.

The only problem you might still have is, they still damage the bonnet and fender before the alarm goes off, You really think they sticker will help? Can they read?

It really stinks that Toyota theft is a world wide issue.
In the Pacific North West of the US we have similar issues.
I use a removeable steering wheel as part of my anti theft measures:

Put the key in, a slight turn to the left and pop off the steering wheel:

So I have fitted my switch now too.
Another DIY security feature I want to add is a cut off switch, not sure what to link it to, but I have a switch under my seat already, thinking of taking it to one of the fuses under the steering wheel, not sure what is worthwhile switching there that will prevent any repossession agent getting away with my Hilux.

Anyone have any ideas? What fuses do we have there?

Other thing is disabling power to the ECU via a relay, some hiden switch(es) and a combination of something being on, before something else can be on. Sounds like a lot of work, but it's not and well worth it. No one is going to try push a truck weighing about 2500 kg, parked in an awkward position to start off with. it'll slow someone down for sure.

If you have an ECU that's fine, if you don't they just hot wire the coil directly from the battery and push start it.
I made up a little circuit with a gate remote and receiver with a couple of relays that can open / close circuits, one could connect something like that to the ECU to disable / enable it.

I have an auto diesel vigo, is there no way to put in a relay to the starter motor and run it through an incognito switch on the dash (like a OEM switch for anything like a diff lock switch) ? I am no auto elec, but to me it makes sense that if there is no power to the motor that turns over the engine, surely the car will not start? Like I said, I have an auto, so on a manual there is still opportunity to push start. Logically it could just be a push button to close the circuit for starting. And the circuit remains open (disabled) when the car is running as the starter motor is only used to start and not run the engine?

Any thoughts from the experts?

My only concern would be the voltage/amps/current/magic going through the switch. The starter must pull quite a heavy voltage/amps/current/magic

I remember in the 90's a friend had an old Opel Kadett and the anti-theft device was a simple brass ball valve with key slot in the fuel supply. It was positioned on the floor right next to his seat, all he had to do was lock the ball valve when he got out, the key was on one of those keyrings that just clicked out, so when we got back in the car, the fuel supply was opened and the key disengaged from the keyring.

Is that not the final method to deter theft? They will be able to drive it for a kilometer or so until the fuel runs out..I experienced this many a late night out, before he remembered to open the valve again and off we went.

While taking my hilux for a service ladt week the service mgr told me how successful the new security bracket has been in stopping these vehicles from being stolen. The cost is a huge R4k but still better than the 300k I would have to pay in yo buy a new d4d 4x4 hilux. Imagine my pleasant surprise when I collected my vehicle this afternoon to he told that this part (new electrical harness) is now subsidised by Toyota SA and vosts only R1565 installed. I really hope it works as I am quite paranoid about my beloved lux being stolen.

About the push start bit....has anyone here actually tried to push start a Hilux?

I couldn't get mine started in second gear...wheels just locked and engine did not turn even 2 revolutions...It'll take quite a few lads to push start a lux I think, especially a 2.4 with EFi  no cold start injector.....
