Center console.

Post by Froll »

Was looking for something to keep myself busy with for the last weekend of my leave..... decided to make a center console for Dalux. I decided to make a fiberglass one, so I had to make a mold first. Made the mold and varnished it. Started to to wax with release agent and found that the last half tin of my gel coat had gone hard on me. So now I have to wait till I go to town again for some supplies, town is 120 km away  Will post more pics when I have got supplies.

Right, got up early this morning to continue working on the console. Last nite I put on the releasing agent. First I put a layer of gel coat on both parts and put them in the sun to dry until they were still tacky. Then I fiber glassed both parts with their first layer, let them dry for a while and applied a second layer. After about 3 hours I started to remove them from the molds but ending up having to half break them out as they had not enough angle on some places. This was actually a known problem as I wanted as much space as possible in the compartments as it is narrow between the seats. But all came out fine as I only broke the molds and not the console.( just cannot make a second one now unless a new mold is made. ) Fitted a old cup holder that I had lying around ( removed the bottom to make it deeper ) Now I must just finish it off and paint it, and still make a lid which will act as an arm rest as well. Will post more pics as I go along.
Sorry pics are in wrong order.

Looking good Roger!

Can I ask why you didn't put pigment into your gel coat?

Andy, thanks and yes the reason I did not use pigment in the gel coat was because in our wonderful town when a person asks for something like that you get the most incredible stare from the stores that carry a few odds and ends. they always reply that they will have to order some for you as there is not a demand for such items and as I live 120 km from town it means another trip to pick it up. so spraying is the better option if you cannot get all you need  I try and buy things I need when I do the occasional trip to Upington, but somethings dont have a good shelf life in our heat here in Vioolsdrif.

Excellent work. Well done.
The eventual result will be worth all this work.

Are you going to cover it all in Vinyl?

Thanks Heinrich, I am only going to cover the arm rest on top in vinyl ( arm rest still to be made ) the rest I will probably just spray paint black with clear coat over. It is only me and my wife so there is not much traffic inside the cab.

Well got up early today,(temp in the early 40 s here at the moment). Finished the fiber glass work and sprayed the under coat. Touched up the few small bad spots with body putty and resprayed with under coat. Quickly made the lid out of wood and covered with sponge and vinyl. Sprayed with black paint( 3 coats, mixed to much paint). Fitted lid and latch and secured cup holder. Had an ice cold Captain Morgan. Removed the old console( cardboard box) and fitted the new one. I think it did not come out too bad. :D:

I love seeing the bits and bobs you build, Roger. Your console looks great, but more importantly:
