Dual Battery system for KZTE

Post by 4x4Maniac »

I pulled through the cables and sleeving... Used 25 sq mm cables I bought at Zettty's Electrical here in Centurion and got the sleeving from Midas.

So yesterday I had a bit of time to continue with my dual battery system and connected the LED lights. Also got the standard PVC fittings but had to put a single cable through each one.

Here are a couple of pics, thus far.

Now my question is intelligent Sollenoid like the NL @R650 or DC2DC Charger with solar panel connections @R975?

I'm leaning towards the Sollenoid and having separate Solar Panels, maybe portable. What's your views? I'm also going to put a separate dual monitor over the two batteries and fitting this inside the cab. The panels to come much later.

Isn't the cabling/dual system a bit overkill for a LED strip?

Werner. Eerstens netjiese install.

Hoppy ek vermoed die install is "future proof" so as hy later n yskas wil insit is die krag klaar daar!

I prefer a normal Cole Hersee solenoid triggered by the ignition, simple and effective.
You can fit two 115/102 A Batteries behind the rear seat of a IFS, i've got one, it pulls my two Engels for 24hrs, would like to add a solar panel before December.

I got 42 LED's so I need a thick cable for all that current   :lmao:

On a more serious note, that's not all I'm going to use it for... Remember the Fridge and DB box with 3 Hella's, 2 Car Charger and 1x Brad Harrison, with Inverter is still coming (still saving up for all these things). And based on NL's diagrams and because of the winch they actually recommend 35 sq mm cabling, that was way overkill for me personally... So after I bought the 25 sq mm I realised that it would in anycase be overkill as I definately want a Fuse between the Main and Auxilary and during Winching it would blow the Fuse. So my thoughts were to put in one of those Marine switches, therefore when winching I can just flip it over so as to not draw current from the second battery and therefore it won't blow the 100 Amp fuse.

This may be a stupid question but I'm also trying to get my head around the concept. Werner, if you have the intelligent solenoid, why would you need a dc/dc charger?

I'm leaning more on the dc/dc charger on it's own, since it also charges as you drive and allows for solar panel connection, and from what I can figure then one doesn't need a huge panel to keep the battery charged when camping.

I'm considering the same unit you posted but thinking of the 25A unit for about R2.5k which still beats the other make sold at Outdoor Warehouse, can't get to the name now, which is only 20A @ about R3.3k

The beauty with dc/dc charging is that you do away with the thick cabling.

Hi D, yip, I've decided to later on get a DC2DC charger, but separate to the bakkies connection with so.ar panel. Kinda like a mobile unit where you can charge the 3rd battery, yip a 3rd one... so when you'are stationary it can be charged with the solar panel and then swapped around. For now the'2nd battery with solenoid is sufficient... Camping the weekend at Warmaths, and working like a beat.

Thanks for posting these details and the photos - something I've been thinking about doing for a while, especially with the use of solar-panels! Cheers!
