Drawer system - Aluminium / Steel

Post by BrettV »

Hi to all the DIY ers

I am looking into designing and building my own drawer system for my D/C. I want to make something that I can easily put in and take out as I will be using my bakkie to pick up stuff from my local hardware store etc......

I have looked at some of the neat canopies and drawers systems that has been posted on the forum. My question is, what is the best to use as a frame for a drawer system as well as a Canopy, Alu or steel? Alu is much lighter which will make it my first option, but it is more expensive and not that easy to weld, correct?

Any suggestions?

Alu welding is specialised and requires some more serious equipment than DIY, so apart from the expense difference, steel is your better option ..... just have it hot-dip galvanised when you're finished with fabrication. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I would not look at steel or recommend it at all :!: Alu. is the way to go, any day

Have a look at the steel slide systems in the 4x4 shops....then pick....try to pick it up. It's quite shocking what the steel weighs!!!

You do not want / need the extra weight, trust me and there are some nice options of building Alu frames like 'connect-it', no welding and this stuff is strong. Yes agree it will cost you more initially, but you will be happy in the long run.

Search 'connect-it' on the IN, you can build a roof rack, caravan, trailer and lots of other items.

This is what they look like and work:

HI Andy, Mark

Thanks for the advise. I have to say, Weight is my biggest concern with Steal.

Does anybody know of a good Alu supplier around Centurion/Pretoria area?

Hi Bret

Im planning on building one myself. Im using 25X25 alu square tubing with this stuff http://www.4x4direct.co.za/shop/index.p ... 8u98t6d161

and the slides
http://www.4x4direct.co.za/shop/index.p ... cts_id=188

one drawer will hold 3 ammo boxes and the other Im going to build a alu drawer.

Im buying the alu from euro steel best price and if you order a bit you will get it deliverd.

pictures will only follow when its all done as I have a rep for starting something and not completing it

Enige idees??

Shaun

Welder by my werk het my raam van die canopy geweld. Baie van detail by Piet Petoors geleen. All in all het canopy my net oor R7000 gekos.

Hi Shaun

Ek laaik jou canopy
