Roof console - SFA

Post by zepplin »

EISH!!!!! Finally :yahoo:
Made totally from 6mm ply. Mounted with aluminium brackets using the existing holes for rear view mirror & dome light. One extra hole drilled at rear of cabin. Collecting 2nd radio on Monday & will then mount & post pics of completed project. I used a second SFA dome light for the front but want to put in some map reading swivel lights when I find a decent panel. The unit weighs about 1.5 kg without radio & gps. This was my first attempt so it is not perfect. Any critisism/suggestions will be welcomed. (Be nice!!)

Still need to finalise costs & will then see if feasible to make on order if there's any interest. Rough estimate at this stage is approx R 1100.

Power is run from the battery (fused) inside the driver's side A-pillar to exit where the rear view mirror would fit. GPS external antenna via same route. Dome light wiring has just been extended from original plug.

Very nicely done and neatly upholstered, Steve!!

No criticisms at all, ..... other than to finish it off by painting the interior panels with a similar colour grey so that one doesn't see wood panelling. Really just a finishing touch, otherwise perfect! ;-)

This will be done when console comes off to fit the 29MHz radio.

Busy with templates for IFS & Vigo - will advise when I have something decent.

Positioning of radios etc can be changed of course.

Thanks for the feedback.

There's a left one & a right one mounted on the doors. I also now have a spare interior one behind the back seat.

Very nice. I really like it!!! I also want to make this for my Hilux but is not sure how to mount it. With gadgets like a GPS, radio's etc it can become a little heavy. Dont want it to come loose when driving a bad road.

Steve, I am looking for someone to upholster the stainless radio bracket I put together. Can I ask who did the upholstery for your project. :?:
If anyone can refer me to a place pls let me know - must do leather - same colour leather as the 2004 KZTE centre console.

Welcome Angus!

I would have some doubts about the centre console being able to hold too much weight, especially that of rifles. Those consoles have only two mounting points, i.e. the interior light and mirror positions .... besides the safety issue, I would hate for one of my rifles to fall ... especially if it has a scope mounted. I have often seen rifle racks that fit at the rear window ... also not sure about this idea .... might look cool with ease of access but prefer not to advertise that I'm carrying weapons (especially here in the RSA). I always stash my rifles behind the seat.

Don't do much fishing these days anymore, but when I did I always used roof mounted carriers, with the rods in sheaths so that the eyes would not get damaged and the tips facing back just in case I encountered any low hanging branches. Worked for me.

;-)

Also a possibility, but bear in mind that the rear seat is already raised which doesn't leave a lot of head-space ..... lifting the seat even more might leave the rear seat for kiddies only. :D:

The nice thing about a compartment like that is that it's fixed and can be made to lock, an additional safety / security feature. Of course one could always fit a box behind the seat instead of under it.
