Post by SYRON CONVERSIONS »

This morning on my way to work, I passed this small convoy of Hilux 4x4 vehicle's, they laughed at me when I passed, because I was driving in FUGLY my old Nissan 4x4 bakkie, anyway what caught my attention was the one vehicle had a nice looking front bumper and winch incorperated, thus I stopped them and took some photo's, these guys had just been on a hunting safari down in Cradock, they were on their way home back to Natal, looked like farmers.

I am not sure what make front bumper this is, but I am sure it will give they guys with new Hilux's to consider.

One thing that I must add is these front bumpers that have been chromed are no good, you will get a reflection from the shiny chrome and this can blind you while driving

My friend Corrie has just completed the manufacture of his own front bumper for his vehicle, what a wonderful job it turned out to be.

Hello George, it is known as The Surf, it has a diesel engine fitted, looks like a nice vehicle, with the independant front suspension it does keep up with us guys in our Hilux's with the solid front axle, it has a locker in the rear, Corrie who ownes it, he told me that he had paid R25 000. for it, but did some work on it, imported some stuff as well for it, Corrie has his own panel beater spray painting business, one hell of a nice guy and friend. :) We always rip him off and tell him that if he does damage his 4x4, at least he does have somebody to repair it.

Yes,

All these bumpers looks great!

My 'Lux has a Nudge-M on and I am quite happy, just one little thing that I would like to have had: The bumper must be wider than the vehicle! Reason being, we share our roads with those not so proud of their vehicle and would not mind another bend/scratch on theirs. I recently had the firsthand opportunity to witness how this really works and my bumper protected me quite well, but it did pick up some scratches on the wheel flare.... :x If it has been 30-50mm wider....

Yes you are correct, these various bumpers that various people fit to their Hilux's make the vehicle look tough, mean and also serve as a place that is strong to support a winch, some people connect or weld recovery points to these bumpers, which can work in some applicatons, however it depends on how the bumper has been attached to the vehicle, have extra supports been used.

But you must remember, these recovery points should be attached to the chassis of a vehicle, but once again, depending on the model Hilux, this might be difficult at times.

Also like I said before, with the newer type model Hilux 4x4 vehices, these bumpers can effect the operation of the vehiles air bags, My preference is that I would rather have a big study bumper that I know will do the job than an airbag that might not work, I have read that these airbags also have their negative aspects to remember.

Hi Guys!

I am busy planning on building my own ARB bumper, for my Hilux's.
This is the templates I made. Still sorting out the places where it must be fitted to the chassis. Will keep you up to date.

Ek het uiteindelik die plaat gekry. Plaat aanmekaar gespot weld. Moet nog die gate vir flikkerligte sny, pyp laat buig vir bullbar en dan die bumper afhaal en verf.

Uiteindelik klaar!!!!!

Caskru, welding en ysters is my stokperdjie. Het 10 jaar gelede my 3de "pypkar" gebou(voertuig se "blikwerk" is meestal pyp.) Dit is my voertuig waarmee ek in die veld ry, daar is niks wat kan krap nie. Simon praat van die Farmgate. Is tans besig om Willys CJ2 te bou, bestaande uit 2mm plaat en baie weld werk. Kyk onder Members Rides, Andries and his Jeep Project.

Hier is foto's van die eindproduk.

Hey Andries

That bumper looks great.

I am also wanting to do something like that for my Hillbilly specifically because I like the original bullbar shape and design, but think it can be adapted to ARB type but keeping the basic look.

What is the thickness of the steel plate, the upright and the pipe you used. What is the final weight of your bumper?
Later....

The BB looks fantastic! A job very professionally done. Maybe you should forward it to SA4x4 for inclusion as a possible article?

Guys if you want a bull bar like this, you can ask Andries to manufacture you one, however you would have to take your vehicle to him, the reason why I say this is because some vehicles have body lifts and the bull bar will have to be manufactured to fit your vehicle and headlights.

Also Andries uses an arc welder that is connected to the rear of his tractor via a PTO, he does not have 220 volt electricity like you and I, he has to start his Lister gen set, in the one pic, you can see that his air compressor has its own engine mounted onto it as well.

Whatever Andries manufactures, he does it correct the first time, even when he made a few babies with his wife

An article appeared a few years back in The SA 4X4 Magazine about the CJ 2 Willy's Jeep that Andries has been busy manufacturing from nothing, he built the chassis and then the body and then manufactured all the other parts as well, I gave him an old bull bar and he cut up the pipe and manufactured his own exhaust pipe from this metal.

Honey please bring me some more coffee
