Overhauling the Rear Brake Cylinder - SFA Import (YN65)
Overhauling the Rear Brake Cylinder - SFA Import (YN65)
I found that I had a major hydraulic fluid leak after this weekend's Trail must have been lead footed SWAMBO , looking at the fluid sprayed on the inside of the rear right tyre; it was the evidently the Rear Right Brake Cylinder Seals.
The answer - to strip and install a Seals Kit; Moto or Euro Parts Code: P 832 (Generic)
The procedure was pretty straight forward, I tried to document it well (with peekchaz Eric ) given that I didn't do peekchaz when I replaced the shoes last month. (hope this makes up for it :shifty: )
The peekchaz are split over two post, please note the Title of the peekchaz to see what I'm trying to describe

7. Symphoming device- consisting of 5mm clear tube attached to brake line submerged in tin od spent fluid
8. Silicone Spray - for seating new seals and coating internal springs after assembly

Did you hone the cylinder a little befor installing the new kit?

Only the bore which is rear most; as it is downward facing it attracts the most corrosion;Mud Dog wrote:Did you hone the cylinder a little before installing the new kit?
see the tarnishing on the piston in the pick
required the lightest touch with 1200 grade wet and dry mos
Ironically it was the upward facing bore that had blown its seal
The downward facing (rear most) bore and piston was very very sticky, I'm sure that it wasn't functioning properly
Incredible what damage a few shallow water crossings and a bit of sand duning does to the rear brakes nê :x

Rich just a quick question. Why does it appear that the brake shoe has some oil on them. Hopefully my eyes is deceiving me and that it is just water or gleen green (yellow)?

Re: Overhauling the Rear Brake Cylinder - SFA Import (YN65)
Just a suggestion, for most vehicles you can buy complete rear cylinders relatively cheap (obviously not as cheap as a seal kit) but still cost effective.
This saves time, mess and fuss and enables the beginner DIYer to do the same job without having to worry about whether he/she has honed the cylinder correctly.

They are Original Toyota Gas Shocksgeorge wrote: What shocks do you have.Never seen red ones
Perfect fit on SFA's with a 50-60mm lift
They come Black and a bit scratched, painted mine up with hi-temp spray paint; paint was available in Primary Colours Only, Anything BUT Canary Yellow nê
They are 100% better than the Oil Cooled Gabriels I had on previously.

Re: Overhauling the Rear Brake Cylinder - SFA Import (YN65)
Just spoke with Gemini,a nd they tell me they have the complete cylinders @ R150 (+vat) each. (ex Japan)
For interest sake, new drums go for R285 each and new shoes for R350 per set.
My luxs drums need a overhaul but I wll be giving them a skim first with over size shoes. The next time they need it I will replace the drums. Called an old place I used to use when I was a mechy and the cost to skim and supply new shoes is R250 (stripping myself) or R470 with them stripping.
