Lights
Hi All,
My dad's Hilux's lights are starting to act weird.
When he switch his headlights to bright it takes a couple of seconds to switch on.....sometimes it does not go on at all.
He thought it was the spots....but even after disconnecting it...it still does the same.
He replaced one of those small black relays.....but still the same.
Any idea what it can be?
Thanks
Werner

Re: Lights
His problem is probably the combination switch on the indicator stalk. I've read that they usually are the culprits when lights start acting weird.

The mechanical side of the switch is most probably dry and needs some lubrication. Spray it with some CRC and work it a little.
Hope your dad connected that spots through a relay(relais)Some bright sparks connect spots directly on the stalkswitch with catastrofic results.

Re: Lights
I had that exact problem some time back. It was the slalk switch, and as they were very pricey at the time, I got an autolec mate to have a look at it for me. He'd repaired many with the same problem and sorted mine as well. It must've been about 3 yrs ago, and all's still well. The contacts arc and get burned. Sometimes they just need to be cleaned up and sometimes need to be replaced.

Re: Lights
Had the same issue with Hot Dog about a week ago.
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Remove the steering column covers and the steering wheel (first mark its positioning, so you get it on in the same way) then loosen the stalk assembly, which slides off the steering column.
* Underneath it is a clear plastic cover with contacts. Remove the cover, which unclips.
* Spray Contact Cleaner (not WD40) and operate liberally. I brushed mine very slightly with the finest emery paper I could find but take care here, you do not want to remove the protective coating from the contacts.
* Re-assemble and all should be fine.
Sorry Rich, I forgot to take peekchaz...

If you don't have contact cleaning spray, cleaning benzine on an earbud works well too.
Also no peekchaz .....

Re: Lights
I repaired mine the not-so-subtle way: soldered the contacts again!! Maybe not the best way but it's still working.
