Rear brake drum getting very hot.

Post by Riceburner »

I just installed new shoes in the rear, I adjusted them as normal, equally on both sides. My driver side gets very hot but I cant fell any binding when I turn it by hand. Driving me insane, the passender sides fine. WTH? :?:

How is your wheel bearing? It might be on it's way out and is causing the heat! Mine is due for a replacement

Darryl, why don't you adjust the side that give you trouble a bit more. Had the same problem once or twice. Maybe when you brake the first time the shoes does'nt come all the way back , spring gets stuck or piston that pushes brake-shoes not working properly ?

Yes, that solved my problem. Not to much though. Had to adjust 3 times. First time to much, only the one rear wheel braked. 2nd time to few, brake drum got hot. 3rd time -PERFECT.

Did you replace drums as well. Mine did that after I replaced drums and shoes, then they told me the shoes are design for used drums, not new.. Had to skim me new drums after the warped TWICE :(
Later....

There are only two possible causes, Brakes and bearings. If it's not the bearings (wheel should turn freely by hand without play ... not too stiff) then it's got to be brake related. The handbrake set up properly, not too tight?
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

If it is only one drum that is getting hot then it is not the handbrake.Loosen the brakes a bit and drive it for a 100km and then reset. The shoes must seat to the drums before you can set it properly.

I normally drive through water, it makes the asbestos wear quicker so it seats faster. Brakes feel spongy though.
