Temp Gauge: Works & then stops working

Post by ryryarmstrong »

Hi everyone: I'm a newbie to owning a toyota Hilux, just got myself a 1998 2.8D double cab 4x4 sfa...my dream bakkie. I need some assistance pls, my temp gauge works and stops working for periods. Where and what must I look for? Has anybody else had this issue? From what I have read is that I should probably aim to fit a new digital temp gauge as the old gauges are not that accurate but I would still like to have the original one on the dash working. Thanks

See if the wire on the temp sender unit makes good contact. Sometimes it is just poor contact which cause this.

My 95 Hilux did exactly the same thing a few years ago, I found if I smacked the dash board it would work again.

I ended up buying a new one from Toyota, its an easy job to change it.

Sounds like a bad connection either at the sender as Pieter suggested or at the cluster itself, could also be a dry joint on the cluster board.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Mine was the gauge itself, I checked all the connections/cleaned with electrical contact cleaner and put it back but it didn't improve until I changed the gauge.
