4Y oil sump related query

Post by Greyhound »

Gidday from Australia,

I came across your forum whilst searching the net for some 4Y related info. Looks like 4Ys have quite a following in South Africa so I'm hoping there may be someone on this forum who can point me in the right direction. I have a 4Y engine that I am wanting to transplant into another vehicle. Only problem is that it is fitted with a rear bowl oil sump and I need a front bowl oil sump in order to clear my cross member and steering gear. From searching the net it looks like the 4Y and 3Y sump gaskets are the same, is this correct ?

If so I'm hoping that somewhere along the line Toyota fitted a front bowl sump to either a 3Y or 4Y powered vehicle. Is anyone able to confirm this for me ?

First prize would be if I could find out the year and model of a Toyota that is fitted with a front bowl sump on a 4Y. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome Gordon!

The "rear bowl" sump with shallow front was for the 4x4 Hilux models as they had a solid front axle and needed the clearance in the front of the motor. The sump you're looking for was for the non 4x4 models and Hi-ace's.

The blocks for 2Y, 3Y and 4Y were all the same, just bores varied, so all sumps and sump gaskets are interchangeable. Even the heads are the same, but obviously head gaskets differed according to the bores.. You would have to also swap out or modify the oil pick-up inside if you change the sump from rear to front bowl.

I have heard of but never seen it done where the sump was cut off a little below the flange, swung around and welded back, thus switching the bowl position but I think that's an unnecessary mission in your case, since what you're looking for was the more common configuration (here in RSA anyways). Try your local scrap yards.

Good luck with your search. :winkx:

Thanks for the warm welcome Andy !
Thanks also for confirming that the 2Y, 3Y and 4Y share the same sump as this makes my search easier. I have seen a modified sump as you describe back in the days when I was putting Ford crossflow motors into Anglias as the Anglia needed the bowl in the front whereas the Escorts and Cortinas had the bowl at the back. It's quite a mission to weld it up without warping the sump and the pickup modification is also fiddly. So I agree that if I can find a front bowl sump and pickup for my 4Y that is just a bolt in option that will be much easier.

I'm pulling the 4Y out of a '87 HiAce and it has the rear bowl option so perhaps I should be looking for a 2WD Toyota bakkie. Sadly the older Toyota's are pretty thin on the ground here in OZ, but if I had a specific Toyota model and year that had the front bowl sump I may be able to order an aftermarket sump and pickup from Asia.

So if anyone does have specific year and model details for me I'd be really grateful.

Now I'm wondering if there was indeed a sump with the bowl in front ...... I have a '93 model Hilux bakkie with a 2Y motor (not 4x4) and just had a look at the sump out of curiosity. The bowl is also to the rear, but it's a lot different and much shallower that the 4x4 version. Although shallower, the bowl is much longer.

Looks like you might have to make a sump mod. You would have to bolt it down or tack it down onto a steel work table before cutting and welding to avoid warping.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Thanks for looking at your bakkie's sump setup for me Andy, much appreciated. Your description pretty much matches the sump that is on my 4Y HiAce donor van.

Whilst searching the net I came across a random picture of what is labelled a 3Y motor that seems to show a front bowl sump. Not being a Toyota expert I'm unable to verify that the picture is actually a 3Y motor (picture attached)

I would appreciate it if someone could verify that it is actually a 3Y. It could be that one of the Toyota forklift models came out with a front bowl sump.

Okay, so after much research I've ascertained that a front bowl sump and oil pickup for a 4Y engine can be sourced from a Toyota forklift Model 8FGCU25. Thought I would post this info here in case anyone else needs it.
