Tuning and understanding your Toyota viscous fan clutch

Post by Thabogrobler »

Whilst doing some research, I came across these threads:

https://neuralfibre.com/paul/2009/03/31 ... an-clutch/

And then how to fill the viscous:

And to make the heat guage more sensitive:

Happy reading!

A great read up, thanks.

Now the question, does the SFA have a similar problem?
I started searching on the SFA and I found old posts with the same problems but no solutions. Is it advisable to change the SFA’s gauge to a digital one?

The SFA visco fan can have a similar problem ( I think they changed from a solid to visco somewhere around '91 / '92). There is a write-up here about changing / topping up the silicone oil.

IRO the temp gauge, it also has that "flat spot" but personally I would leave it the way it is.

Very interesting Thabo.

Do you think that temperature gauge mod would work on your KZ hilux ?

For the silicone oil used in the viscous unit: You don't have to buy the expensive stuff at Toyota.

Visit your local hobby shop, the R/c cars use the same oil in their shock absorbers. Just look fir the correct CST. Will cost around 1/10th of the price Toyota charges.

Hi guys I am new to the forum. I have had plenty of problems with viscous fans. Especially when towing, boosting, or sand driving. I have learned a trick from a old timer. I use Wyns charge for oil and had very good success with it. The fan will definitely have more resistance that might impact your fuel economy slightly but it definitely works.
