Hi there,

Has anyone flushed their 5 speed auto box lately?

I have a 2009 4.0 V6 Auto , currently standing on about 230 000 km's and I wanted to do some preventative maintenance in replacing the ATF.
I have already replaced the other oils in the drive line ( Diffs & Transfer case)

As far as the manual goes it "Strongly Recommends Genuine Toyota ATF WS"

So far I have found the following oils that according to the manufacturers are recommended for automatic transmissions of Toyota and Aisin Warner as well as some other manufacturers.

Fuchs Titan ATF 6400
Total TOTAL FLUIDMATIC MV LV
MOBIL MOBIL ATF 3324
Liquid Moly Top Tec ATF 1800
Ravenol ATF-T-WS Lifetime

Does anyone have any experience with any of these substitutes, or is it best just to stick with the Toyota OEM WS oil?

As per manual - I strongly recommend the genuine Toyota WS ATF.
It is readily available at the Toyota dealerships and reasonably priced.
Any specific reason you're considering other ATF brands??

I thought it would be more expensive at the dealer.

Got a price from Toyota Menlyn at R455 for 4 liter. Thats R113 odd per liter.

Which is cheaper than the Liquid Moly (R235) and Ravenol (R150)

I put 80W-90 GL4 in the transfer case and 80w-90 GL5 in the rear diff... the super duper unicorn milk 75w-90 must still go into the front diff as I only now see I need a 10mm allen socket to get it open...Image

That sounds about right - just a little over R100/ Litre for the genuine TOY WS ATF.

Interesting you have shown the transaxle fluids.
I have found the genuine Toyota Transaxle fluids to be cheaper than the other
makes and brands on the Midas shelves, something like R60 odd Rand per bottle at Toyota if memory serves me correctly.

Extended the rear diff breather... but hell the front diff just keeps on fighting back.... this weekend I'll try and add some heat to loosen the drain plug. Its not moving with anything I tried so far.

Seems to be a common problem..
The Aussies even have a tool and replacement plug with 24mm head that you can buy...

An air impact driver will get it off fairly easily but don't use a hand held impact driver and hammer if the plug is aluminium or if the housing is cast iron (normally the case on gearboxes more so than diffs). You could also try shocking it with a hammer, many medium force taps rather than a few hard hits.

If you have alternative transport available, take the old plug with as a sample to Midas or AutoZone to get a replacement plug which has a bigger nut head - most bolt & nut outlets will also carry them.

Had the same problem as you described.
Patience is your friend.
First loosen the fill plug.
I Used lots of spook pee and then heating the plug, allowing it to cool down.
Don't use water!
Some more spook pee and more heating and cooling of the plug.
The expansion and contraction of the plug usually creates small enough movements
to break the corrosion.
Mine came off fairly easy after that.
I replaced the drain plug with a high tensile bolt from Bolt & Nut
like the one in your picture and the original gasket from TOY.
I smeared some copper compound on the threads and torqued it down to spec.

Thanks for all the advice.

I managed to win the drain plug by soaking it with Q20 last night and with some gentle motivation by hammer later today.

I got a replacement plug from midas at the pricely sum of R30. Added some anti-cease compound, new washers and filled with new fluid.

I think the picture shows that an oil change was overdue... went on the schoolrun and so far so good.

Next up the actual atf change...Image


P.S. Shampoo bottles work for more than just shampoo...

Finally got around to change the ATF this weekend.

Basically we drained the gearbox sump (+/- 2.8 liters at a time) and measured the same amount of new oil and pumped it in, then run the car and go through the gears for a minute or three. Then drain and fill again.

I used a generic inline 12v fuel pump to pump the new ATF.

After 4 flushes checked the level once the oil is up to standard operating temperature.

The oil is still not 100% red, but gear changes are definitely smoother.

I think I'll do the flush again to try and get more of the old stuff out in 30 thousand kilometers or so.
