V6 VVTi Filter

Saw something interresting today.

How many of you knew that a VVTi has a oil filter on the head which filters the oil for the VVTi system?

This video shows it for some Toyota 4 cylinder but apparently the V6 has the same.

Very interesting to know this.

I am sure with age those filters do get slightly blocked up and will affect the VVT-i performance which will lead to a loss of performance and worsened fuel economy.

I have ordered 2x for my Prado and they are costing R 92-00 each from the agents. Will have them replaced at the next service and see if there is any improvement on my Prado as it is pushing 220K now..

Knew about these head filters for the VVT-i but had completely forgot.
So will be changing mine on the next service.
Toyota calls them "Oil Control Valve Filters"
The guys replacing them should note to order new gaskets also.

I just cannot for the life of me understand why the left bank nut is indicated as a non-reusable part, torque at 62Nm.
(The right bank nut is re-useable with torque setting 25 Nm)
Beats me..if someone may have correct answer.

Just an update on the post regarding the V6 VVTI filters.
My Hilux has 271 000 km on and I assume the filters have never been changed.
I took the Hilux for a service at a friend's workshop today.
The two new filters, with the washers(gaskets) and the union bolts were ordered from Toyota.
I paid about R 450.00
Its not such a small job to change them. The alternator needed to be removed as well.
The filters did not look too dirty-not blocked or anything.
Not sure why the torque settings are different- the bolts are exactly the same and looked re-usable.
Will see if changing them made any difference.
Does anyone on the forum know what their actual function is ?

If the engine oil and filter is changed frequently with a good quality oil, there should be no need to change the oil control valve filters regularly. It has a metal sift which can be washed anyway.

The function of the filer is to prevent dirty and sludge from flowing into the small galleries of the camshaft and clogging them.

VVTI - is the acronym for variable valve timing with intelligence. It is a system which works with the increase in oil pressure to alter (advance or retard) the camshaft timing for optimum performance. Similar to the job of a performance camshaft, but with a better idle.
