Headlight ( low / high ) beam with turning light switch

Post by Stallion »

Good evening to you all.

I refer to the above subject.

I've had some issues while changing from low to high beam lights, at times when changing from low to high, the lights switch off, then I need to bring it back to low beam and change again to high. This happens at times only, not on regular basis so far. Before it reaches to regular basis, I want it solved.

I understand that the contact might be dirty with carbon. Hence I'll need to remove the switch and get it cleaned. I've not done this before as I'm not good in electrical work, but am guessing this won't be difficult.

Do I need to follow some important procedures, or is this straight forward? Any advise and suggestions will highly be appreciated.

Regards

Its the contacts in the stalk switch. I've had the same problem before and posted a step by step remedy with some pics. Will go back and look for it.

I may have been a little confused. I know that I had the same problem and resolved it but the write up with pics I referred to is actually about the window wiper / washer side of the same switch cluster. Removal of the switch cluster is exactly the same, so the thread will still be useful to you.

I will continue to look back if I did a write up about the bright / dip switch. :winkx:

It's actually much simpler than the wiper switch since the high/low switch is not in the stalk, but in the column. Remove the steering wheel and the column covers. Remove the plugs from the loom. You should be able to remove and clean the entire switch mechanism. It's not difficult.

Good Evening Guys,

Thanks, Nic for your response.

I solved the problem, removed the complete switch & got a replacement of a complete switch from the used stores, only that the wiper switch on the replacement was of an older version where the Interval timing for the wipers was manual, not automatic the way it was in my original switch. I, therefore, called the Electrician and got the wiper switch swapped to my original switch and installed. Everything went like clockwork by the Grace of the Almighty.

The uninstallation and installation of the switch was straightforward, thanks to Mud Dog for a detailed explanation step by step that really helped and made it simple.

Thanks to all of you for your swift responses on this matter.

Best regards

Forgot to mention why I replaced the light switch. The plastic bracket that held the light switch in place, had cracked, hence not giving contact to the high beam. Cause I managed to get another complete switch, I opted for replacement. The old switch is with me, and will repair the crack and keep it as standby.

Well done!

I'd love to replace my wiper switch with one that has intermittent, since currently my intermittent switch is my left hand...

Hey guys,

Good evening and hope all well at your ends by the grace of the Almighty.

The problem with my high beams is back again. The switch that I replaced from the used stores is as good as new. The contacts are clean, but yet the same problem has returned of the high beam wouldn't work when changed from low beam at times, just as it used to.

Where else should I look, or it's the switch again?

Your assistance on this will highly be appreciated.

It might be the lights relay is faulty?

Would it behave like this if the light's relay was faulty?

Other thing is, since I got the vehicle, the "pass " beam doesn't work, when you pull it to pass, the sign of the high beam appears on the Dash ( blue in color ), but the head lights doesn't work, and when you do the same while the headlight is on low beam, the low beam turns off. Only the park lights work on that mode. Since the change of lights from low to high wasn't an issue in the past, I decided to ignore the pass beam.

Do you think that this is now related to accelerate the problem?

I'm still inclined to think it's the stalk switch or even the connection block / wiring for the switch that's faulty even though you have replaced it with a second hand one. From what I understand is that the problem was 'solved' with the switch replacement, but has now returned. That would indicate the switch or connections rather than the relay but doesn't mean the relay can be excluded as it may indeed be faulty.

Good luck.

Hey Mud Dog,

Thanks for the response. I've called my electrician this morning to get it sorted. Let's hope it'll be solved.

Will keep you posted

Got it sorted by the grace of the Almighty.

Was the Stalk switch contacts dirty. Got them cleaned with WD40, and now the pass beam also works.

Thanks all for your Co operation. Thanks Mud Dog.
