Noisy D4D

Post by Mudder »

Hi

I am a newbie - my first post.

I recently came into possession of a 2013 Toyota Hilux 4x4 S/C Raider 4x4 3.0 D4D. I also own a 2006 3.0 D4D Fortuner 2x4 (for the past two years).

The history of the Hilux is that it was used by a farmer for most of its life. It has 150 000 Km on the clock with a partial service history.

My question relates to a diesel knock or feint clatter/valve lifter/rocker type noise in the engine that doesn't go away when the vehicle has reached operating temp. I am familiar with the noise when cold as experienced in my Fortuner. This is different. During the 150 000 Km service I had the injectors inspected and flushed with a detergent recommended by Hennopspark Toyota. There were no reports of excessive wear on the injectors. The noise, which is better since the injectors were cleaned is still there. The vehicle is also much lower om power than my Fortuner. Consumption on a mixed city/highway commute is 8 Km/l.

A fellow subscriber here who just had his vehicle serviced said that they adjusted electronically the "pilot injector" and that his performance had picked up and the noise is gone. Is this a common procedure and if so, who can help explain the reasoning/procedure behind it. I am fairly technically minded.

Any input will be much appreciated.

Regards

I would say yes but its not so audible during idling - more so under acceleration.

the noise i'm referring to is more on fevving the engine.. sound almost like a bearing knock...
according to the comments those are fairly normal of the D4D, especially when cold. But i noticed you mentioned that your noise stays there even when reaching operating temp?

I am curious how the injectors were inspected and flushed with a detergent and who did it for you. I have not heard of such a procedure. To inspect the injectors they need to be removed from the cylinder head. And flushing them is not possible unless they are opened via a current or stripped. If they did an injector test with the computer then they would have been able to check if the injectors are leaking or not. If not that is a good sign.

I would use Wynns Turbo and injector cleaner for two tanks and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the suggestions. The procedure was performed by Hennopspark Toyota.

Did you need to pay for a fuel return rail and seals? (it is prescribed by Toyota that all of those items be replaced if the injectors were removed and is quite expensive).

Dit klink met alle respek na 'n storie vir my. Daar is nie 'n manier wat Toyota injectors strip en skoonmaak of herstel nie. Hulle sal die injector net vervang.

Mudder, often there is nothing mechanically wrong with these engines, (they are pretty well built) Can I give you some cheap advise before you go through any expensive procedures. Do the following and see if it changes anything. Go out and buy a GUD airfilter, a GUD fuel filter and get these things replaced by someone you trust or do it yourself. Then throw in Wynnes injector cleaner on a full tank and drive it empty, it is harmless and will clean any contaminants(to a certain degree) you might have along the fuel lines and into the injectors. If this does not help then you at least have canceled out the basic service items, you can then move onto the next possible trouble causer.
