viscous fan and aircon

Post by Farmerbrown »

Good evening all.
Couple of questions regarding my 22R 96' SFA .
Should the fan spin freely when turning by hand ? or should there be some resistance?
What value has the aircon got ? at the moment it doesnt work , So should I remove it or get it fixed , Also the Air con radiator is right in front of engine radiator , Surely it restricts cooling ?
Your feed back would be appreciated .

No your visco fan is not suppose to spin freely .If you push it hard when the engine is cold it is not suppose to turn a full 360 degrees. Very easy to service your visco fan.Just go to your nearest Toyota dealer and buy one tube visco silicon oil from them.
Split the two halves of the the visco fan.Remove all the old silicon oil and clean properly.Add the new silicon oil and put the two halves back. Most of the time one tube of silicon oil is enough. The more silicon oil you add the more resistance the visco fan will have. If you add too much silicon oil your visco fan will operate like a fix fan.

Repair your aircon. An SFA with a working aircon is a big bargain.

I can turn my viscous fan by hand with only a bit of resistance when cold.

This is how it's supposed to be IMO. When the motor is below a given temp the visco slips since no major cooling is required. Even though it slips, it still spins but the drag on the motor is reduced. Once it heats up it stiffens and provides the necessary airflow over the radiator.

If your temp gauge remains constant around the centre position, I would leave it as it is. Just M2CW. :winkx:

Thanks Mud Dog , She sits just below the centre mark on the heat gauge . Sending radiator in to be serviced , so That will also help .
I will leave the fan as is , Don't often get to town , So who knows how long I will have to let her sit like that .

If there is a problem developing with the radiator or the fan, you will notice it on hot days or when the motor labours like on hills, with heavy loads or towing - the needle will climb on the gauge. Just keep an eye on it under such conditions. :winkx:

She is due to do her first major trip down to the wildcoast in November . I'm already a nervous wreck , Hoping all goes well . Putting new lights in her this wknd , CV overhaul kit just arrived from N1 4x4 .R1300 + 2 ffront wheel bearings R700.
The same kit from stealers was going to be just over R10k.
I will have her back together in a couple of wknds , Fingers crossed ...

I am yet to see an accurate Toyota heat guage!

They all sit in the middle of the dail untill it is too late - it then jumps into the red zone.
