Costs to recon a 4Y 1987 SFA

Post by Koppelaar »

Hi guys, the old lady's 4Y smokes and uses too much oil. Also very heavy on juice.
What would it cost about nowadays to do a complete engine recon and is it worth it?
Or should one just transplant something a little more powerful?
The bakkie is used mostly on the farm but I would like to be able to take it into town now and then.
Looking forward to your views!

Regards

Probably about the price of a new replacement 4Y engine from Midas. I fitted one years ago to Bulldog and am quite happy with it. If you go this route, do not dispose of your old engine until you have finished with the engine swap, you will need to swap the sump cover of your old engine with that from the Midas engine, and I also used my original alternator.

Price back then was around R7k but probably double that figure now. The replacement engines offered by Autozone were cheaper than the Midas ones but did not look quite as good, castings were roughly finished whereas the Midas engines have (or had) nicely finished work.
