Hilux Tire Sizes

Post by Giovann »

Its time for some new rubber....

I think of getting something bigger for the hilux, would like to know how big of a tire I can fit without running into issues of rubbing or having to make any modifications.

I'm currently running Hankook ATMs 30x9.5 R15, what profiles would you guys recommend...

Also does anyone else have experience with this tire, I've about 50,000kms on mine and my side walls a ton of deep gashes & cuts and the lugs/tread also doesn't have even wear.

Hi,

You can go for 31's easily, some guys even fit 32's but I am not sure if any mods is needed.

You V6 will easily turn the 32's.

IMHO 30's is tòo small for the V6.

Hankook is supposed to give around 80k kms from what I have read/heard. What shape are your shock absorbers in if you mention uneven wear?

Shocks should be good, I replaced them just over a year ago. The wear on the tire is bit wired, you can clearly see that some lugs are higher than others cant be balances as a result... I cant also fee the vibration through he wheel.

This is a common issue with AT tires. If you look closely you will see that the wear between the leading and trailing edges of the blocks are different. Strangely enough the trailing edges have more wear than the leading edges. I have tried different strategies to combat this as some fitment centers told me it is because of running the tires at too low pressure so I tried higher pressures with the same result. I am now running them in opposite directions to the dismay of the fitment centers. I have a rotation schedule where the tires end up running in the opposite direction every 10 000ks and it seems to stop the uneven wear and resultant noise. I will need to see what impact it has on the tire life but at this stage it does not seem to be worse.

I thought i was doing something unusually stupid, I rotate every 10k kms... The hankooks perform well on the dirt, no punctures and good traction... I do a quite a bit of off road stuff but not nearly enough to see this kind of damage 🙁

Thanks made a few calls, they say I will need some suspension mods for 32s...

So I'm goin for the 31s, it's between:
BFGs
pirelli scorpion atr
And maybe the hankooks

Can anyone comment on the side walls of the BFGs and Pirelli?

No personal experience with the General Grabbers but I have really read lots of favourable reports on them. Definitely worth looking at.

Hows the road noise & wear on the General Grabber M/T...

Don't know if I do enough off-road to warrant MTs, I do like 1 camp a month in the bundus (usually on smooth gravel) and then 1 serious 2k km+ overland trip a year.

I saw a similar issue on Bridgestone Duelers. Caused lots of noise on tar!
