3.0D4D Oil filter

I change oil and filter every 5000 k's on my bakkie. The problem I sometimes have is getting the old filter off the engine. I use a water pump pliers but it can be a battle because of the limited space.
None of the bought filter removers work.
Anybody have a secret?

Before putting the new filter back in next time, use a bit of oil applied with your fingers around the gasket of the filter. When you tighten, do not over tighten. Most often hand tight without over torque will do.

Yes and it is also very easy to over tighten the filter. especially because you have quite a good grip on the filter from above. It is only really necessary to tighten it enough for no leaks to occur. If the tools don't work you are definitely tightening it too much. It will be hard to remove even if you did put oil on the seal. I have two types of filter removers. The one looks like a bicycle chain through a 1/2 inch drive fitting. It works well but can be difficult to get it around the filter in confined spaces. The other fits over the top of the filter with three fingers and has a gear mechanism that tightens the fingers on the filter as you increase the force. I have never battled to remove the oil filter from my D4D with either of those tools.

It's usually the agent filter that is so tight. My 3 finger one is too big.

The bicycle chain with 1/2 drive fitting works best for me. For interrest sake, why do you change oil every 5000km and not 10000km?

I have a chain one but I also have one similar that has a lenght of like seat belt strap instead of the chain. Seems to work better in the confined space. Also every 5k for me too! 10k is too much for my conditions. Better to much than not enough I say. With these modern day engines there's no such thing as over servicing!

I don't agree with that comment. If you run a good quality engine oil and use 50 ppm or less diesel, the combustion on the turbo charged engine is very efficient and oil will last longer as there is not much contamination from the combustion chamber.

Agree I use full synthetic oil from castrol every 10000km and I drive 80 % dirt roads and have not had a prob in 200000km I do however change my air filter every 5000 km for all the dust

You get a oil filter adaptor with the 3 fingers as mentioned above for smaller oil filters that fits on your 1/4 inch socket drive works the best just remember to put the oil on the rubber of the new oil filter helps with removal and prevents ruber from griping to much and pulling out of the filter

worst case scenario, screwdriver through the old filter and it comes off easy...

Yes that is a last resort but there is very little space to swing a hammer or anything there that could enable you to get the screwdriver through the sides of the filter.

try starting off with a small screwdriver to create a "pilot" hole so its easier to get a bigger one in without too much hammer swinging

I can see it now. This is a similar one to the one I am describing and using with the three fingers and the geared mechanism in the centre. It works really well. The only difference is mine has three round rods for "fingers" which are heavily stippled to avoid slipping.

I was fortunate enough to work for Mercedes many years back and as part of the job we had to buy our own special tools and a filter wrench was one of the first.

This is the special tool the agents normally use and luckily it fits most of the cars I have had with the exception of the 4y. It even fits the v6.

Not sure what the tools cost these days but worth a look if nothing else works for you.

Absolute best is the filter-socket units.

4x4Direct has some on the shelf, but cant seem to find it on their web now.

DO check though that you get the correct one for your filter.


I have collected a few of these over the years, as each vehicle uses a different filter which then requires a new socket ...

So the Oil from Toyota are not of good quality? (not recommendable) who supply Toyota anyways?

I know a number of very reputable diesel workshops use Caltex Delo 400 on the D4Ds and have used that on my bakkie for the past 190 000 kilometres. Before that it was obviously Toyota oil.

As far as I know the Delo 400 was replaced by the Delo 400 MGX. Damn good oil.

Those filters are expensive. You can get a whole Donaldson filter set (air,oil and diesel) for about the price of the oil filter. Maybe a little more or possible even less. Even buying GUD filters loose will cost about half of the quoted price.

Rather over tighten it and drive screw driver thr it , than have it coming loose. Happen to me. hand tighten it, then it come lose after some time. Cost me a new engine.

Strange, in 40 odd years of driving and mostly servicing my own vehicles, I have never had an oil filter come loose and have never installed other than hand tight. Never owned a D4D though. Me thinks you maybe had some crud on the seal, so didn't tighten properly
