99 2.7 4x4 DC - gearlever/gearbox hot

Post by deonjvr »

All - first post

Need advice please, gearlever/gearbox is getting extremely hot to the point of not able to touch the lever right at the bottom. Worst if parked for a short period after a drive.

Have replaced gearbox oil with Toyota product, so question is - replace clutch and recon gearbox at the same time or just replace clutch and see if fixed? Or can it be some thing completely different.

Had a mechanic confirm he has the same on his Cruiser, but surely this is not normal.
Mileage 175km.

Any advice/thoughts appreciated please

Not sure if I can help, but my 2.7 Gearbox lever can also become rather hot. It used to be much worse before the gearbox overhaul which was only necessary because the previous owner must have used the fifth gear carrying or pulling heavy loads. While they had the gbox open, they also replaced all bearings. It can still get quite hot, but only on really hot days it will be almost too hot to touch.

Boxes can get quite hot, especially with long trips and loads. Most boxes rely on air-flow to cool them, but engine bay heat flows over them as well. Not a lot you can do to improve it - without a pump there's no sense for an oil radiator, so you're stuck with air cooling. Check that the outer casing is not caked with dirt / mud so that heat dispersal is optimised.

A slipping clutch will add heat.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
