Troubleshooting - KZTE Engine light

Post by hercudp »

I'm currently using the KZTE engine manual to troubleshoot the reason why my engine light comes on and will explain later the symptoms that the bakkie have. While searching for the spil control valve relay (on the passenger kick pannel as the manual states, but found nothing), I found this relay in the right hand side kick panel. I test it and found it is faulty. There is no indication of a relay situated in the driver kick panel in the chassis manual or the engine manual. There is no number on it and went Toyota Pretoria East and they dont know either. See photos of the relay. Does someone know the function of this relay?

Here is a extract from the manual relating to the spill control valve relay location, but it is not there in my bakkie.

The relay in the pics isn't a Toyota original one must have been fitted by someone during the bakkie's life. The spill valve is controlled by the Engine Ecu. The Ecu has a spill valve driver on the board please do not put battery voltage on the spill valve this useally causes a blown Ecu.

That looks like a 30 AMP relay mostly used for spotlights.

Thanks! I also thought it was maybe a relay for spot, but the bakkie doesn’t have spots.

I have 2 problems with my KZTE:

1. Sometimes it idles rough, other times not.

2. When traveling up a long hill you can feel the bakkie starts to lack power and then the engine light comes on. When I take my foot immediately off the accelerator the light goes off in 5 seconds and then continue as normal. If I don’t take my foot off the bakkie has no power and the longer I have my foot on the accelerator the longer it takes the engine light to go off afterwards. This drives me crazy!

The diagnostics show a code 14 that is the timing control system and according to the manual the following couldbe the problem:
• Open or short in timing control valve control valve
• Fuel filter clogging (I replaced the filter and check again, but no clogging. Also cleaned the tank, but no dirt)
• Fuel (Freeze, Air in) (Have checked the pipes running from the tank to the injection pump)
• Injection pump (internal pressure and timing control valve) – I replaced timing control a week ago, had the injectors done because of the problem and did a recon on the pump 3 years ago.
• Engine ECU (had it checked an there is no problem)

I also had the wiring checked and checked it myself, but see no loose wires or loos connection. I’m very reluctant to take the bakkie to Toyota or a diesel injection pump specialist because of previous experience with them.

Check the connector on the timing control valve with all the vibrations it starts to bend the metal contacts on the inside of the plug(wiring side) thus losing contact at times causing the malfunction. Best is to replace the contacts inside the plug. Check for breakages in the wiring where the plug's wires goes into the main harnass

I had a similar problem , beginning of 2013, no power uphill and takes long to pick up speed, even downhill.

On the dyno test ,it showed that there is power , but not all the way to the top.

Had the turbo done, still same , (low in power)

Replaced the spill valve, PULLS LIKE A TRAIN. Even 8months later , still cant believe the extra power I missed before..

2002, KZ, 215 000 Kms
Recon turbo , recon diesel pump & new spill valve == R18 000 (worth every cent)
Hope this helps to give you some idea if the simptoms are the same.

:celebrate:

Eventually I took my bakkie to a diesel specialist. The outcome was that the diesel pump's housing and piston had severe wear and tear and that it was releasing pressure. Fixed it and problem solved. However my bakkie is still idling rough at some stages. Does someone know what it could be?

The engine light on my kz te stays on, power and performance is good I don't feel any wrong with the vehicle. The only thing I can see is that it needs to be serviced. Can this cause the engine light to stay on?

Hi George. Does the light stay on all the time or does it come on after a bit of driving
