Advise needed - Stone chip paint..!?!?

Post by Numbnut »

Hi guys!!

I'm back from Honeymoon and now I have some things that need taken care of. First on my list is to redo the rubber stone
chip on my camping trailer and then mount 2 new gas bottle brackets from Front Runner! Yip, the newly apointed husband, me,
is going to work on his camping trailer and not installing kitchen cupboards or such stuff!! Why and how you may wonder, well,
I bought the new Wifey, PO, 5 NEW Cooper STT's for her (ours now) Ranger!! :D: :D:
I placed the Pitbull's on the trailer, after I lost 2 tyres on the Honeymoon, but that is another story! :x

Ok, I am concidering Rhino Lining the trailer, but that is going to take loads of prep work and stuff!! So what do you guys
recommend with regards to rubber stone chip paint?? I need information on Quality + Durability + Manufacturer + Affordability?

I want to redo the nose cone and the inside of the wheel arches and as much as possible of the under carriage also! I am not
sure what type or make the current old stone chip paint is though, but I guess I would be able to just paint over it, or what??

Thx
Daniel

Ok, I havent had time to post pics but I have done some research and found 2 possible paints to do the trailer.

What do you guys recommend, Hammerite or Durabak??

I'm leaning towards Durabak because of its rough finish and durability!

The stone-chip paint is tough and durable ... what it was designed for and from what I can make out would be a suitable option for your requirement. As you say, it can easily be painted over without peeling issues like you would have with something like Tuff-coat rubberising.

Thx MD

That was my thoughts exactly. The current old stone chip is really rough so I don't think adhesion would
be a problem. I must just give it a good wash and leave it to dry out in the sun for a day or two.

Any idea what a tin of Durabak costs and where I can get it?

Daniel, I have no idea what the cost is these days, but most automotive paint outlets will carry it, or at least something similar.

ive stonechipped my entire hilux with luxor stone chip, its a water based stone chip that i purchased at marouns in kempton park/chloorkop.
its easy to work with and dries pretty quickly, its not a high gloss finish so adhesion onto that with a 2k paint is quite effective, although i would always recommend flatting any surface before applying your primer. just remember to let it dry 2 or 3 days just to make sure, longer is always better. i havnt got any experience with other brands so i cant knock them down, the only downfall to the luxor paint is getting pin holes on the surface, just apply a few thin coats of primer and then 2 coats or so of the 2k top coat. i used normal grey primer, no plastic primer, and worked well.
i hope this helps, on a luxor perspective.

I'm not going to remove the old stone chip paint. Just going to go over it with the Durabak, so no need to primer.

Ok, I added some peekchas so you guys know what I'm talking about!

The areas that I roughly outlined with red is the areas I wana go over again with a new polyurethane or rubberize
type of paint. Something that I would be able to do myself.

The alu being a non-ferrous metal may require a special primer .... perhaps something like 'strontium-chromate' .... best check with your supplier what would be suitable.

MD, only the black area's will be re-painted. The alu will stay the same.

I think my red outline is confusing you a bit, sorry!

I have painted my old trailer with a product called Durabak. I have done it about 1 year and a half ago and I think it provides better preotection than stone chip.

I have bought it from an automotive paint shop in Roodepoort.
