3 Provinces

Post by Thunder02 »

This past Easter weekend a group of us visited the 3 provinces trail. Wow :shock2: , what an amazing place.
Before I start posting pics or giving out any information, please remember one very important rule/fact.

If you book your spot, remember to book the historical trail at the same time, you can't arrive on the day and book the trail, weeks notice needed.

With that said, we managed to drive the 3 provinces trail and I managed to through away two sets of underwear :blushing:

We gathered at the Wimpy on Friday morning for a brekkie in Standerton, after re-shuffling the whole place, they managed to fit us all in, lots of strange looks from the locals. Great breakfast, we headed to Volksrust, a bit of road works, but with Thunder leading the way the pace was rustig ;-)
Once in Volksrust we picked up some lost members of the All Wheel Drive Club and headed west for a short 13 km and turned into the farms main entry.
Once all the paper work was handled,we headed up the 2.5 km trail to the camp site.

No power, and a donkey for the showers :yahoo: ,thanks to PIKKEWYNTJIE for all the hot showers

To the top left of this pic you can see the farm house witch has been in the family for over 70 years, the view from the house down into the valley is truly amazing.
Saturday, was basically a "laze around the campsite day", with a few of us heading into town to pick up supplies.
Worse part of the day was waiting for traffic coming down the farm road.

So Sunday morning arrived, and after a great brekkie, we hit the trail :cooldude:
Here are a few pics of the beauty you can expect while driving the trail.

Magnificent place.
Waiting anxiously to see if you had attempted the steps to the waterfall, and more importantly, Helshoogte... :shock2:
Been there twice, skipped Helshoogte twice. Did everything else though, even if Loretta came out of it with a slightly modified alu side-step or two.... :laugh2:
I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.

After a few hours of driving, you reach the beacon which marks the point that the 3 provinces meet, 2258 meters above sea level.

A few meters away, you have a view of the valley with a 90 meter drop, home to some Black Eagles.

Mmmm, also gave it a skip, what looked more like a challenge, was the "Tunnel", two weeks prior to our visit, a Jimny had rolled, with most of our rigs set up for overlanding we played it safe, the kids and wives were happy to hear of our decisions :laugh2:

Helshoogte, is the trail you see in the middle of the pic, between the two vehicles.

Once we reached the top, we could see the trail was not used much......... :shock2:

We had one chap try helshoogte, but although the day was sunny it had rained two evenings previously, resulting in damp conditions below the loose rocks on the top, most tricky section. This meant there was absolutely no grip to be had, and it's not the sort of obstacle you want to attempt with the "more speed is better" approach.... He basically sat there spinning for a while, and then did the most hair-raising turn-around against that mountainside, amd came trundling casually back down again while the rest of us at the bottom were still trying to get our hearts out of our mouths.
3P is paradise, even if you skip all the obstacles. And this time of year it is lovely and green.

Btw, as far as I know the Jimny rolled on the Bobbejaanskrans route.... Could be mistaken though. But there is a steep, long rocky descent section on that route that had Swambo complaining much louder than anywhere else.
I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.

With the camp site in view, we had the final two obstacles to deal with:
Desent.jpg
Desent2.jpg
Desent3.jpg
Desent4.jpg
Desent5.jpg
Made one mistake, drove up to the drop off, called over the radio for the others to hang back and went straight into the obstacle. :shock2:
Only once I was committed did I realize how bad it was.
Never do that again............first set of undies out the door, and still to now can't believe I did not walk it first :slap:

And by far the best trail I had ever done (with my limited experience)

off topic - well sort off

For the Cape Tonians that enjoy these pics.

Do yourself a favour and go enjoy Bojaankop, outside Calitzdorp

Only one short grade 4 section. The rest is just a VERY scenic drive. Nice remote camp.
