Toyota Corolla Cambelt snapped

Post by Donkey »

So on my way to work this morning, just as I onramp onto the N3 old trusty broke his cambelt  , shift starts @ 07:00 so I sent supervisor SMS to notify my late coming. AA was called at 06:36 and by 07:45 platkar was on a flatbed heading home  how's that for service?

Anyway after work today will strip and clean the engine, as I'm also day shift tomorrow, will install new cambelt on Wednesday and I just hope I didn't bend any valves.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Tumelo. If you have the 1600 4AFE/4AGE motor all should be fine as it's a non-interference motor. If it's the 1300 (think 2E motor) you might have a bit of a problem

Yip you right, any of the 4A motor do not bend valves, so Donkey if you have 4AFE or 4AGE or 4AF or the older 4A 8 valve you are ok, but if you have a 1300 (2E) I am sorry for you it does bend valve and break rockers.

I have both motors, the 4A-GE (TwinCam) has once snapped a belt before, with no hassles. This one in point is the FE, thanks guys.

My first one I didn't think so. I was used to the VW engine and then this one (1.3L 12 Valve) the cam timing mark buggerd me around.

Today bought timing/cam belt. Vehicle jacked and supported on stands, front driver side wheel off. Have never worked on this car so don't know where the marks are. Anyway, alternator loosened and fan belt inspected and removed. Loosened 4 x 10mm nuts to remove head cover. Afterwhich I could find the cam timing marks.

Below, on the block, is a timing dot also. I figure this should align with the mark on the cambelt pulley.

Can someone please confirm.

On the bigger crank pulley there is also a mark, this is the pulley that runs the fan belt, power steering pump and aircon pump, though I do not have these, this mark is the one for advancing or retarding timing. It aligns to the marks on the lower cambelt cover with zero and ten degrees on it.

Is this 100%?

Had to come to work, will see if I can do it tomorrow.

Oh culprit for the snapped belt was a engine mount bolt that came loose and fell to the bottom of side and as did so cut the belt and rested on the bottom by the small crank timing pulley :aggresive:

It turns freely and I suspect no bent valves. How do I check compresion ratio? I guess there's a tool for that?

Hey Tumelo... you really don't have to worry about the valves or anything else. Just line up the marks, fit the belt (and maybe tensioner seeing that you already have it open) and bobs your uncle.

Friend of mins had the same thing happen to him and after installing the new belt all was fine again

4AFE does not bend valves. From the photo the timing mark is right. You can also check to if the 2 timing marks on the gears also line up. Look at the back of the cam gears.

That plastic cover comes off, exposing a small toothed crankpulley, on the lip of this pulley is a mark, which I lined up with the dot on the block (12 o'clock position). Cam timing was easy to figure out.

After the belt was replaced, I turned the engine to ensure all marks lined up. All was in order. While at it a new tensioner was put in, and I noticed the lower engine mount was broken, this too was replaced. Having put everything back in order, it started first time without hesitation. It is still on stands as I want to wash off dirt at the bottom of the engine tomorrow.

Thanks to all for your input. I'm actually chaffed with myself right now :yahoo: :dance1: :excited: :excited: :excited:
