For the Carp Fishermen

Post by kfxnando »

Need to put a few facts down 1st

Where Filmed this it's difficult to get permission to fish, due to people having mixed booz with fishing and having left hooks lying around where kids play

So down to business

Saw some, what I think is monster size Carp

Was lucky to get it on video, battery died just after

How big do you guys estimate this carp to be

Am no expert, however my limited knowledge tells me around where1m long, and with that in mind would say 20kg or more

Is jy seker dis nie n baber nie. N karp sal dalk bietjie meer uit die water klim en n 20kg karp is masief groot. Dit kan n 20kg baber wees.

Fernando, I used to work at Orlando Power Station in Soweto a few years ago ( 12) and there were massive carp known as a Chinese carp. They were kept in the dam that was used for the cooling water in the plant. These carp live on the algae the grows in the damso they are very difficult to catch as they dont bite on bait. I have seen massive ones when the water had a problem and the die. I dont know what weight they were but they grew very big. Maybe those grass carp you were talking about are the same thing. But I dont think that is a barbel, maybe I am wrong. Lets hear what some of the more informed people have to say.

Judging by the tail fin, it looks like barbel to me. Usually smaller carp that jump out, but more the tail that flaps over, and usually closer to shore.Bigger carp tend to come up & then go down again creating those swirlies in the water.

Difficult to say from the video, but I would venture a guess in the 10kg region, carp get short & fat, barbel get much longer.

Ok

Just couz me have been quiet on this one, does not mean me stopped trying to solve the puzzle

Am currently watching "fish warrior" where he is trying catch monster barber/cat fish in Europe

Then have been paddling many more times in Germiston lake, have put the go pro under water, however from the recordered sound, it makes a big noise underwater as it mover through the water, hence frightening the fish

Have seen what I suspect is the same one that i filmed on the same OP, unless there are others of the same size, could be more
Have seen plenty, slightly smaller then the one in the video
When I went paddling in the middle of the day, with more sun light, saw many of them floating around, and when not putting the camera underwater and disturbing the water and the fish
Saw clearly

It's a Carp. No doubt
Just wish I could get permission to try catch one
