My ideal light is one that can shine a spot at 200m and have a zoom option.

Firstly it must be LED!

Small compact with a moebiese punch

Pieter you forgot to include battery life and reliability/durability.

Must be LED
Must be reliable
Decent Battery Life
Must shine a decent spot an illuminate far enough with a halo around the centre for close up.
No rechargeables !
Not too heavy but in some cases needs to be so that you use it as a weapon.

This is currently one of my favorites http://www.streamlight.com/product/class.aspx?cid=27 along with my trusty 2, 3 and 4 cell LED maglites they are always in the mix.

•Pistol-grip spotlight features 3 modes: High, low, strobe
•C4® LED Illumination Output:
High - 115,000 candela peak beam intensity/210 lumens
Low - 10,000 candela peak beam intensity/20 lumens
•Runtime (using alkaline batteries):
High – 8.5 hours
Low or Strobe - 120 hours
Unlimited runtime using 12V DC power cord

I use it as a spotlight an general light on the farm, very nice for watching game etc at night. When you connect it to 12V it bypasses the batteries and if you need to get around on foot you just unplug it and you are on your way.
Excellent battery life, LED and outshines most rechargeable handheld spotlights and most 12v Spots. Verry little battery drain on the vehicle.

I am an LED torch fanatic, I cannot walk pas one without buying it. I lost count but I think I had about 40 at one stage - to my wife's dismay. (Wat wil jy met nog 'n flits maak !)

I had a look at quite a few flash lights recently (including head lamps), and I have to say, the Led Lenser range is excellent value for money. I got my wife the H7 headlamp (which kicks my Petzl Tikka 2's backside by a country mile), and more recently got myself the L7 (for the bedside), which is compact, but throws a mean beam. They can both also focus the light, or flood it, and are half the price of the Petzls!

Check 'em out here:

I have a Fenix TK40 as the "Main Baas" and of course plenty of the little MXDL torches as little footsoldiers! ;)

I have the M14 Led Lenser and this torch is truly amazing, it puts my old rechargable maglite to shame and its light too.

Ek het vir baie jare n 4 cell maglite met n LED gebruik. Onlangs het ek n LED lenser M14 gekoop, die maglite is geen match vir die M14 se helderheid en afstand nie.

Agreed I have both and the maglite with rechargable battery is one of the strongest maglites that there were and it has nothing on the M14, there is just no comparison.

My Maglite is 20 years old, works everytime and is still waterproof it's 4 cell non rechargable, i would like to upgrade it to LED to increase battery life.
Bought a small expensive bright "crime inspector" type, worthless for self defence, feels like a toy and will get lost soon.

I have solid battery, not sure if you can get an LED globe to work on that battery because it pumps out a lot more power than the standard D cells. If I try new standard batteries the globe is yellow.
