Potential fuel leaks, gearbox issues, blown fuses… Volkswagen has announced that it is to recall more than 15 000 Amarok and 4270 Tiguan models from across South Africa. Wheels24 identifies the issues and asks VW for solutions...

Volkswagen will recall 239 000 Amarok bakkies and 800 000 Tiguan SUV's globally due to mechanical issues. Here in South Africa, 15 500 Amarok and 4270 Tiguans owners are affected.

The Tiguan SUV suffers from potential power failure due to fuse issues and problems with its dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) caused by being filled with synthetic oil. Friction result in a fuel leaks in Amarok single and double-cabs.

LIGHT FUNCTIONS CAN FAIL

Wheels24 spoke to VWSA to find out what the issues are, the causes and how it affects owners:

Tiguan recall:
Vehicles affected – 4270 units from 2008 to middle of 2011.
Problem – Light fuses can blow and in isolated cases issues can occur with the DSG failure.
Cause: According to VWSA: “In isolated cases, a fuse may trip in the Tiguan, thus resulting in failure of one of the two vehicle light circuits. This in turn causes individual light functions to fail. However, the vehicle’s electric circuitry ensures that some lights remain on all around the vehicle. The driver is immediately informed of this on the instrument cluster.

“It has been discovered that, with vehicles with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DQ200), electric malfunctions could occur in the gearbox power supply if synthetic gearbox oil is used. This applies in particular if the vehicle is subject to a hot and humid climate, coupled with a lot of stop/go driving."

Solution: Owners will be contacted and a fuse(s) may need to be replaced. VW SA says replacing the fuse with a tougher coating “takes a few minutes”.

As for the DSG issues, VW SA explained: “Volkswagen has decided to launch a global voluntary campaign to request all customers with a seven-speed DSG (DQ200) filled with synthetic oil to visit a workshop for an oil change. The vehicle owners will be informed by VW accordingly.” VWSA reports that the synthetic oil will be replaced by a mineral based version.

'MAY BE AFFECTED BY LEAKS'

Amarok recall:
Owners affected: 15 500 2.0 TDI Single and double-cabs built from 2010 to June 2013.
Problem: Potential fuel line leaks
Cause: “Some Amarok bakkies equipped with a 2.0 TDI engine may be affected by leaks in the fuel pipe within the engine compartment.”
Solution: “In order to avoid any accidental damage to the fuel lines a chafe protector is being fitted at the affected points as part of a global recall programme.” Amarok owners will also be contacted about the campaign.
