Looking at buying a 4.2 GX 80 series - any advice.

Post by Dingo »

Hi Folks

I'm looking at buying a Cruiser 80's series, 4.2l GX and hoping to get some good advice - good or bad.

Details: 1997, GX, 4.2l diesel, with Alpine turbo done by SAC, 166 000kms.
Price: R160 000.

Any advice, good buy, is the price right, any concerns on the aftermarket turbo, mileage on the engine ok, any issues with those engines.

I had one...price is good assuming genuine kilos.

BUT...stay away from aftermarket modifications. Personally, I would not touch it.

If/when that head goes, you are in for R25k +

Years ago a friend of mine had a turbo fitted to his 4,2 D bakkie and it was an monster but after the 3rd motor he realise "finally" that that old school engine is not design for a turbo. STAY FAR FAR AWAY.

I personally don't think it's the bargain of the year.
I have the petrol model, firstly because the diesel just have no power (although very reliable if not turbo'd), and secondly because I was advised not to turbo them
the diesels on them are not that good on fuel consumption to make up for the difference, yes I know the petrol is bad, 4km/l is my lot
Your mileage is low, which need to be checked for being real, you can get them between 80-140k depending on extras, 160k sounds a bit high. the vehicle seems pretty standard, thus no extras to be considered in price, check what the trade is on them.
you can do an easy 500k on them (non turbo'd diesel) as well as petrol. maintenance is not that bad as not much go wrong usually.
I am just saying, if you can get a petrol for anything between 80-140k, and your concern was fuel consumption), I am guessing this one will give you 6km/l (no idea rally), but for the difference in 2km/l you can do some serious mileage on 20k

Agreeing with Jaco here
model does not really matter here, depending if you are looking for the GX or VX, they were brought in through toyota from around 1994 onwards, before that are probably a direct import, but so might a lot of them be after as well.
Decide between manual or auto, the EFI (fuel injected) or regular.
I would say from R100-140k you can really be picky, extras such as diff locks (R17k@), addtional fuel tanks (usually 50 ltr, but you can go up to 140lt on the 2nd tank, winches and other are a huge bonus and usually does not effect the purchasing price too much, although a fully equipped one might have been used a lot for over-landing and playing (my concern).
I have not seen many for R160k to be honest, especially not standard.

Try and get one with 1HDT-FE.They are scares ,but got the same figures as the new V8 diesels.I almost almost got one,but luckily sanity prevails and I got the KZ,but to be honest when I see a 80 I go into perv mode :silent: But I still love my Lux more. The 100 also came out with the 1HDT-FE and IMO a great motor
