MB to VW to Toyota TT (Toyota Tarzan Trokkie)

Post by ToyotaTarzanTrokkie »

One day we will do it in style. Now we just do it!

The team JAZMAR - Jaco, Annelie and the four kids: Zjac, Mareli, Arle' and Riku. We love Africa, over-landing, nature, horse riding, cycling, birding, photography, cricket, camping, reading, adventure ... six people can have a long and varied list of interests. We are also home educating our children which gives us the added advantage of not worrying about school holidays when we plan a trip. Every trip is part of life and learning.

I have always wanted a Land Cruiser 80 series but I think my ship got lost or sunk on the way ... on the other hand it could be at the harbor or has left again while we were having fun somewhere else.

Our first trip cross the boarders of South Africa was in 1994 in a Golf GTi - sorry no photos. Looking for photos of my Toyota Tarzan Trokkie ( Toyota TT) I came across these photos. In 2003 we were on our way to the In-laws and family in Namibia and we decided to explore Lesotho on the way there.

There was no problem with the wading depth of the MB 200.

In 2006 and 2007 we went to visit Oupa en Ouma again. Both trips were done in December / January.

This time we did it in a VW Jetta.
When you are in the Namib and you feel like you are the only people on the planet you can not whish for much more!

On one of the trips we went to Luderitz and decided to visit all the places of interest in and around town. We even tried our luck on some of the sand tracks in the vicinity of Dias Point.

We eventually reached our destination and it was definitely worth the effort.
We needed more traction!
We needed more traction!
As is evident from the photo we did not drive to the end of the road ... we walked ... as is often the case if you do not have a 4x4.

Will continue shortly.

Great story, it's quite amazing what you can achieve if you just do it.

I hope someday you will be able to take your children on an African adventure in a 4x4. There are many beautiful places in Mama Africa.

Some of the places we went were marked " 4x4 only" on Tracks4Africa. At the Spitskoppe we spent 3 days before continuing to Uis where the family was waiting.

Then this crossed my way.

This Cruiser has been in town for a few years and I was eyeing it but did not think I will get hold of it at a reasonable price. I think it was kept for me, because I got it for R12 500! (2005)
It was ideal for the family.

The best of all was it was a Troopie! Lots of space for people and stuff!

Not too bad ....

Did I mention that I am still waiting for my ship to arrive? Lots of money to restore this old Cruiser was not on the table and I decided to attempt the project at home. What the heck, we were going to paint the house so why not paint the Cruiser as well? :D:

I got a bull bar from my brother in law. Like a child with a new toy I had to start playing immediately and fitted the bull bar before starting the tedious work.

Stripping the Toyota TT was easy enough. Sanding it down was not so much fun. Filling what I initially thought will be a few dings became filling several dents. Welding some cracks on the bonnet and wheal arch panels - specifically where the battery is attached took some more time.
13. More sanding.jpg
12. Sanding, filling and fixing.jpg
Then we started painting the Cruiser.

We did paint the house first - just for warm-up and practice.
We are getting there!
We are getting there!
I am sure those of you who have been paying attention can see that the walls of the house is cream and no longer pink!

Almost there!
15. Almost there.jpg
To be continued...

Ek het die enjin so 'n jaar terug oor laat doen omdat ek 'n betroubare voertuig wou he.

Thanks for all the encouragement and comments. Over the last few years I have been a very active reader of trip reports on various forums. The best reports I have read are by Metaljockey on ( http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=269251" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ).

I have never bean a keen writer - but sharing my passion with you has not been a bad experience at all. This format of interactive communication is better than TV, magazines, books or the movies. It is my opinion that even a real life trip is incomplete without a good record of some sort - pictures, stories, memorabilia or even that scratch or dent that inspires you to go on the next trip.

I will go through the albums to find a few more picks of my Toyota TT.

This has been my desktop background for a while.
