130 corolla 2e recon

Post by dalkill »

Does anyone a good mechanic i can get second opinion on pricing for this engine recon
Saw an ad on gumtree and guy responded it should be about R6K to recon including replace dodgy crank.
Bit hesitant of just having engine recon by someone i don't know...

6K sounds extremely low, especially if the crank is going to be replaced.

The problem is on high km the bores on these engines go out of round, becoming ovall.

See if you can get a clean one from an engine import place.

Swop over the carburetors and go.

The import 2e engines come with LP gas carburetors on most of the clean ones.

6k is very cheap.
If you do it, do it properly, otherwise you will just have to do it again soon.

If you say the guy's quote includes replacing a dodgy crank, does that mean you already stripped the motor?

nope... 6K included everything... removal, recon, and refit.
he says they apprently deal with alot of 2e motors and has spare 2nd hand cranks that still good.

other quote i got was R13.8K so it thought let me see if i can buy an already recon motor for less.
then i stumbled onto this guy. he selling already recon motors for R7500 fitted.
But told me he could redo mine for R6K then i don't have to go thru the whole clearance thing.

maybe he genuine... but ja... when it sounds too good to be true... it probably is.

If it was me, I would have it reconned and balance the internels. These are rev-happy motors and getting the internals balanced makes a massive difference.

What I normally do to get an idea of what is reasonable is to get a quote for spares and machine work.
Get a quote from Autozone or Midas for:
4x pistons
1x ring set (Note with some cars you get piston and ring sets complete)
1x main bearing set
1x big end bearing set
1x full gasket set - Victor Reinz
1x waterpump
1x oil pump
1x timing belt and tensioner kit

Call Head Zone in brackenfell and ask them how much they charge to do the head. (note: valve stems seals will be included in your full gasket set, you supply it to whoever does the head) Don't skimp, skim the head.
Call an engineering shop and ask how much to bore it 1 oversize and how much to cut the crank 1 oversize.

All cost above will give you an idea. If the cost above is more than R6k, I would not use the guy who says he can do it for R6k because he will not replace everything which needs to be replaced.

Some guys don't bore, they just hone it and use old pistons with new rings. It does work, but not for long.
