Its all about price and then analog cameras which are a lot cheaper and dvr that you can run 24/7 then the Ethernet cameras that have a lot more flexibility.

I've seen ads in Gauteng for a complete system R1599 colour with recorder and remote access via cell phone. Brother in law installed this system working just fine. Only records on movement.

the old saying "you get what you pay" comes to mind ....
During optimal light many cameras are decent .... now try them in bad light ....
nothing worse than catching a full burglary on camera, and the image quality is such that you cant use it.

If you just want to see if someone is there it is fine but you will not be able to identify a person after the fact.For that you need good 2mp cameras and if there is an indecent chance are the cops will not even collect the footage.4 channel dvr and 4x cameras approx R6500

I use one of these "hobby" systems at my shop with 16 cameras + DVR.
With big harddrive - loop recording - employees and customers now think twice
Works very well but dont expect HD quality.

We have even gone as far as mounting dummy cameras in some applications .... reduced incidents drastically !
