Spare a thought
Through the years I have often mentioned my uncle in threads - well actually my wifes uncle, but over the last 25 years we have grown very close.
As long as I have known him he has always had a Hilux.
And a well kitted 4x4 Hilux at that. First the good old 2,2 donkey. That Hilux has TRAVELLED SA, Namibia and Botswana !! With family in Namibia he had the opportunity to travel and camp as we can only dream off.
20 to 30 years back they were the original campers that bush camped in Botswana. Old black and white slides of hundreds of elephants at the watering holes ....
Last year, at the age of 74 he still led a small group through Namibia !! Due to work load we could not join in
At 75 he has the classic aches and pains, but still keeps up his projects in his garage.
3 weeks back he was "short of breath" ....
few days later he was getting oxygen at hospital ....
then sedated and on machines to breath ...
Monday they operated and got a tragiotymy (SP?)
Today they took X-rays of his chest as he is just not responding to the treatment ....
feeling so helpless. our harts goes out to my aunt and his kids ...

I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.

Our thoughts and prayers with you and the family.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: Spare a thought
My dad passed away many years ago and left us with one message:
"Dont cry for me, celebrate the good times we had"
Today we celebrate the good times we had with Oom Compion.
Shortly after retirement they went on an European holiday, some three weeks away from home. They were back home four DAYS, then it was off to Namibia for a couple of weeks of holiday and hunting. Back home he slept at home one day, then it was off for a 1600km round trip to his bee hives. Get home, and the next day they were off to the Oudtshoorn festival.
Reminds me of another extended trip they did, before retirement. They were off to Botswana, and came back via an extended route to Stilbaai Jongensfontein. I had to pick up granny and drive their car up to Jongensfontein, and bring back the 4x4 to home. And off they went in the car, with extra seats for granny, for another trip. THIS was actually my first time behind the steering wheel of a 4x4 Hilux, the trusty old 2,2 donkey.
Over the years I have had a number of projects out in Hermanus. With meetings every 14 days I drove past their retirement house often enough. Always stopped there. Found them at home maybe 1 in 4 or 5 stops !! They truly made the best of their retirement and LIVED. :)
I am sitting here with a tear in the eye and a wry smile thinking off all the good times.
It is with mixed emotions that we say our final fairwell to Oom Compion. On Saturday he took his final trip.
We will miss him !
We celebrate the good times.
And we are thankful he was saved a long sick bed ...

Re: Spare a thought
And so the day came to say our goodbye's ....
"Volmoed" on the "Hemel-and-Aarde" road outside Hermanus was the perfect setting.
The rain that was predicted from Wednesday held back till late Friday afternoon, and we were afforded a very good day.
Family and friends came from as far as Garries and Johannesburg.
We had to bring in more seats again and again into the 80 seat venue. Approximately 110 people was in attendance.
Hearing his family, his grand kids, his neighbors, and many of his friends bear testimony to a remarkable man brought tears to many an eye. And if you were lucky enough to know Compion Schreuder you would have joined in the laughter as many a tale was recalled ..... :)
He had a FULL life. The low point must have been losing his son at the age of 19. Yet he always saw the bright side in every thing. Always saw the good in people. ALWAYS was ready to help others. An example I can only strive to follow ...
Dis met n knop in die keel, traan in die oog, en n blye hart wat ons dink aan die jare wat ons gedeel het met oom Compion.
sy versoek dat sy as op die Oranje rivier gestrooi word sê baie van die seun van die Kalahari.
