I assume it's petrol. How is it aspirated - carb or EFI?

Re: heaven help me...please
It has a carb but then fuel injection on the block... dunno how that works really.
Took the petrol cap off today and seems better...as if breather pipe is blocked perhaps.
Also has a fuel return valve on the injection rail that might be faulty?
Ran diagnostics on it today - no electronic faults.
My kids are embarrassed to drive with me in da nissaaan

Re: heaven help me...please
That doesn't make sense, it's either or. The fact that you speak of a pressure regulatory valve on the injection rail means it's EFI. You may be mistaking an old type bulky airflow meter and throttle body as a carb. If it seems to run better with the fuel cap removed, it makes me wonder .... if the fuel cap breather is blocked the tank will be a little pressurised, not vacuum as one might be inclined to think due to fuel being used. Such pressure may slightly increase the pressure from the pump but it shouldn't be that significant - furthermore the pressure regulator on the fuel rail would compensate. If it's a fuel problem, it's either too rich or too lean - do you get the smell of unburned fuel when it's running? If the pressure is right, then it could be faulty injectors, but with petrol motors these seldom give hassles. Have you checked the ignition .... plugs / leads etc?JamesC wrote:It has a carb but then fuel injection on the block... dunno how that works really.

Re: heaven help me...please
James, I had a Nissan 2.4 hardbody with 460k kilos on the clock by the time I sold it (great motor, thirsty though)
Also had the stutter/farting business going at some stage, had the carb overhauled, still same trouble. Had me pulling my hair out, and running from one mechanic to the next trying to figure it out, no one could help. Then one day the farting started up again, and I saw a signboard for a mechanic, so I pulled in. The guy came out, listened to the idling, told me to switch off, fiddled for about a minute, told me to start, everything was perfect. Turns out the hinge on the float in the float chamber was sticking. A quick bend, no more hassles.
And if that fails, you can borrow some matches from me...

OK. EFI then. If it is not a Toy V6 I am looking at, I get a bit lost...
Mickey, sounds like you are onto something. Cleaned the "carb" yesterday thoroughly.
Andy, no smell of unburnt fuel.

Fuel filter and fuel pump. A friend once struggled with his 2.4 that had a bad case of hiccups....

Re: heaven help me...please
I doubt it...it runs fine for long periods and then suddenly, without warning, there will be a loss of power, stuttering, splurting and farting along and then just as suddenly gone again...
Steps taken:
1. Changed fuel pump and fuel filter
2. cleaned maf
3. cleaned the "carb" of the efi
4. tested breather pipe and drove without petrol cap - no change
5. had comp diagnostics on it - no faults. (shows crank sensor on zero but mechanic thought that is because it has a distributor cap)
to me it feels like a fuel supply issue
can the fuel relay on the efi rail be faulty?

With it being intermittent as you now describe, it sounds more like an electrical issue - like a poor connection somewhere.
Intermittent faults are a bugger to pin point.
