MrB's Prank on OOOOMS..Slow forum browsing? Easy speedy fix!
Hi guys,
I know many of you battle to browse the forum quickly, due to many factors(like CellC internet  )... but here's a small tip to speed up your forum experience...
The normal URL for the forum is:
http://www.hilux4x4.co.za/views
The faster URL is as follows:
http://hilux4x4.co.za/views
Note the 'www.' has been removed from the URL!
The reason why it's faster is that the DNS(Domain Name Servers) have one less resource to identify and resolve, so every server that the HTTP query passes through can respond a little faster... add all the DNS servers/routers up... and thats alot of time saved!
Hope this helps some of you forum regulars be a little bit more productive during the day... and get to bed a little earlier at night!
Mr B

Only one problem .... you click on a topic, or go back to 'Active Topics' and the "www" is back immediately. By the time you have tied to remove it the page has long since loaded.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: Slow forum browsing? Easy speedy fix!
Check this out, been doing a little analysis of the speed difference, using a speedtest server in Cape Town:
URL: http://speedtest.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (no www.)
URL: http://www.speedtest.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I scored 400kbps faster speeds across my connection, that equates to a 16% speed increase! Not bad for basically doing nothing!

Re: Slow forum browsing? Easy speedy fix!
Further analysis... I've been reliablity informed that Google's Chrome Browser allows the best speed of all the browsers... so, of course, I had to test... the above results were achieved with Mozilla Firefox on Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat... I've installed Chrome and run another speedtest.net test... the results... again noting that the [www.] was removed from the URL for max speed:
Pretty impressive, gained another 32%... that's 48% increase in browser/internet connection speed...
So to conclude:
Slowest: Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9 (doesn't matter which version)
Faster: Mozilla FireFox(decent)
Fastest: Google Chrome Browser(by 32% over FireFox)
If you want to try Google Chrome, get it here:
http://www.google.co.za/chrome/eula.htm ... epagepromo
Don't forget to remove the [www.]... oh and one more thing it doesn't work for every site, a few older non-speed-optimised ones still need the [www.]!

Re: MrB's Prank on OOOOMS..Slow forum browsing? Easy speedy
For those of you that don't know, some time back Mark and Andy conspired to pull a prank on me, someone from vehicle clearance in JHB called me to inform me that a Mr Naidoo is trying to register my bakkie in his name. The person told me that this may be a scam and I should check if my bakkie hasn't maybe been stolen, of course I was 40km from home, where my bakkie was standing... I just assumed someone stole my bakkie and went into a flat spin... the rest as they say is history!
And yes... payback's a.... Mr B
Yes I'm glad Andy had a little sukkel with the www. thing as well!

You had me believing it was possible, but I wasn't acting on it .... laughed it off after the first try .... my browsing was fast enough anyway. But a good one nonetheless!

George in all honesty, I didn't cheat with stats, it just happened to work out that test without the www. on the speedtest.net server was faster... and for the record the Google Chrome stats are real, it is faster and will make your forum pages load faster! Cassie and myself are both fiddling with it!george wrote:You also had me I was actually feeling a difference.Da wheel will turn
So there's a little lie mixed with alot truth!
