Tire size on Prado 90

Post by sybie »

Hi all,
I need some advice please.
I have fitted 245/65/R16 tires on my 2002Prado 3.4 A/T. This resulted in over revving and excessive fuel consumption and speedo overead by 15km
I want to change to the correct size. Originally it was fitted with 265/65/R16 and my speedo overread by 11km.
Can i go to 265/75/R16 or for a narrower tire 235/85/R16.
I was told this will result in excessive body roll.
Anyone got experience in this as the dealers with all respect does not know.
Thanks
Sybie

Pretty sure the standard was 265/70/R16. If there is space in the wheel arches, you could go to 265/75/R16. It's about an inch more in diameter. I have seen them on a few Prado 90's.

235/85/R16 is pretty much the same diameter as the 265/75/R16 - so you could go those. That size tyre will not cause any more body roll. It's the standard that the Defender came out with, and the Prado 90 is more squat than that.

Christo,

the correct size standard for the 90 series Prado is 265/70R 16 with a 112 Load rating and a speed index of S or higher.

Going up to 265/75/R16 is going to cost you a fair amount of extra fuel, the gearbox will hunt more on long climbs and it actaully slighlty overgear the vehicle which tends to spoil it a bit. You really don't need that extra tyre height unless you want to go play on serious rough trails.

I kept mine on standard size and even towing a 750kg off road trailer, it at times struggled a bit. So be carefull of upsizing just for looks. The speedo always have a over read factor designed in from factory. On 265/70R16 it should be approx +/- 5 km/h. The Odometer is a close to spot on as you will get, on the standard size.

I recently replaced the 90 prado with a 120 and again stuck to standard size tyres in all terrain, and I am glad I did. Oversize is only when you stay most of the time offroad, which i don't. Staying in Germiston tells me you will also be driving a lot on tar so keep to all terrains, and standard size. The 3.4 only have so much torque at 125 - 130 km/h available and upsizing will mean the gearbox is going to start to change down more frequent which in it turn will become annoying.

Thanks to all. Looks like I will stick with the standard size. Anyone interested in 245/65/R16 tires. Done 4000 km. Spare brand new.

The standard was indeed 265/70/R16. If there is enough space in the wheel arches on std coils and shock set-up, you could go to 265/75/R16 and yes 235/85/R16 is pretty much the same diameter. That size tyre will not cause more body roll. These tyres works well with aftermarket suspension like OME and the like,.... I've done so on a Tuna D4D.
