Pierre is onto something. The plastic diesel filter housing is the first thing I would look at. It has a non-return valve and if that is giving hassles you are bound to experience the type of symptoms you are currently getting.

With a diesel it can only really be the diesel supply but it is strange as you should be getting the diesel warning light if the pressure in the common rail drops.
