Could be a million things. What were symptoms before it didn't start, what are the symptoms now. If you are prepared to spend some money, get hold of Trarquin 0720304692, on the airport road. Knows his Toyotas, espcially diesels, and I found him to reasonably priced and reliable

Peter can i give you some advise. Get the genuine Toyota anti-freeze. They are ready mix ,no need to add any water. They are by fast much better than any other anti-freeze. Mine does that too, but only in 4 low in reverse. I'm guessing clutch and just try not to reverse in this mode.

I wonder if the ball bearing version would produce slightly less friction and hence make turning the steering wheel easier than a roller bearing version? Just a wild guess, but this design has been plaguing me.

Norman, I think I got those pictures from this forum a long time ago. They were definitely an Australian thing. Maybe just search portal axles and hilux (or cruizer, to find those exact pics). I'm pretty sure they will cost an arm and a leg though. What does Kia Ora mean? I'm guessing it's good day....

Eric, I wasn't 180° out, but rather 90°. I really thought that by not turning the engine, I would put it back without disturbing the timing. I didn't realise that the slot to take the dizzy shaft, turns independently of the engine, and I think that if I had just turned it back to accept the shaft on...

Strange, in 40 odd years of driving and mostly servicing my own vehicles, I have never had an oil filter come loose and have never installed other than hand tight. Never owned a D4D though. Me thinks you maybe had some crud on the seal, so didn't tighten properly

When I had mine done the engineering shop recommended that they grind some ali away to lower the compression to suit 95 octane. Can't tell if it made any difference except that I don't get any pinking anymore. Car runs well, never tested the compression
