western cape protest updates

Post by african dust »

could we please consider starting a topic on updating the latest regarding the riots/protests in the western cape. some members are traveling or planning to travel and an update from people who are in the know. Could help keep everybody safe...or safer. I need to go capetown- montagu in a week..so somewhat saddened for those caught up in it and worried for those that need to go there ( myself included). we hoep sense prevails.
Not asking for a venting topic but rather a factual safety and reality update. just a thought. Ignore if not deemed needed or part of the forum.

I agree, please those in the unrest areas. We were diverted at De Doorns on the way up to Joburg on Saturday, and from news reports it seems the situation has worsened with stone throwing etc. We are planning to drive back to Cape Town on sunday with an overnight on the way. Was thinking of staying over at Gariep and then possibly re-routing at Beaufort down to Oudtshoorn to avoid the stop\goes around the 3 koesisters and Beaufort and the protests at De Doorns... Some feedback and suggestions... pleeez

Hi Val,

I am not a hundred percent certain about this but i know the roads between Swellendam-Ashton and then Ashton Robertson and those areas was closed last weekend. So if you are going via Oudtshoorn you will have to go to the N2 and then Somerset West. Heading up the N2 this afternoon to Stilbaai and I heard that Swellendam might be closed. They had protest action last night...

Just realised anyway that my route was all wrong... if I turn off at Beaufort west I have already passed through the roadworks at 3 Koeksisters anyway... will have a look at the route again, and see what I really mean....

The South African Department of Labour received a claim that a Robertson farmer was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to investigate.

Department of Labour agent: "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them."

Farmer: "Well, there's my farm hand who's been with me for 30 years. I pay him R1 400 a week plus free room and board."

"Then there's the mentally challenged worker. He works about 18 hours a day, seven days a week and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about R100 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of brandy every Saturday night so he can cope with life. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally."

Department of Labour agent: "That's the guy I want to talk to...the mentally challenged one."

Farmer: "That would be me."
