Hi guys

I am just looking for ideas on little mods for my hilux to help with fishing expeditions!

has anyone got any good ideas... I know there are plenty of fishermen here!

What tyres are you guys thinking of using... as some destinations are far and may require a a bit of beach driving (if your lucky)

Other little gadgets, rod holders and lights etc

I want to fit a rack on the back of my lux on the roll bar to keep the fishing rods upright when driving around Henties. The reason I want it behind the window is that my reels picked up quite a lot of the Salt road. with the rod holders on the bull bar. Extreme weather was mostly to blame as they had rain when we where there.

Interresting topic! I once saw a guy in Henties bay that mounted he's rod holders on the inside of he's Hilux's tail-gait(without canopy). when it's open, its holding the rods upright, ready for baiting or holding it while waiting for the big-one.With the tail gate Closed,(rods still in it), the rods is suspended over the roll-bar(while driving ect.) I don't know if it makes any sence,...whish I had a photo though...thought it was a pretty good idea

Thats pretty interesting! I have seen a couple of guys with holders on the front! Never thought of the salt factor!

Do you guys fish with the canopy on or off?

That is what i use to carry my fishing rods on my bakkie when i go fishing in Hentiesbay

do you guys fish with lights? What spot and anything at the back? some guys i have big fluresent tubes in them

Normal spots and incandescent lights chew the battery very quickly .... the flourescents are quite a bit better but Pieter has got some really smart LED units that give as much if not more light than a spot, and are even less energy hungry. You should be able to run them for hours. He has different types and strengths .... not sure that he has them advertised in the shop section as they're more specialised than general use, but would be perfect for your application. Be warned that they're a little pricey, but then still a lot cheaper (about 40%) than what you would pay for the equivalent in the retail outlets. Drop him a PM.

yeah I have seen those LED lights!

Unfortunately i have had to take the canopy off my bakkie in order for it to fit inside the garage!

Any suggestions for lights with no canopy? i was also thinking of mounting a bait cutting board onto the tailgate! and maybe a bottle opener for those beers

Mount the lights onto the roll bar facing backwards (underneath the cross-member so that it doesn't interfere with the canopy). That way they can serve as a light inside the canopy when it's on, or the load bin area if it's off .... it should light up the dropped tail gate sufficiently to work there as well (canopy on or off).

Yep! ... They'll be bright enough without chewing your battery power up.

how did you wire up those led lights? Straight to the battery from it position on the back?

Anything that you connect to the electrical system should be connected through a fuse. You could connect straight to the battery with a in-line fuse close to the battery, or, since the LED's draw so little power, you could take power from the fuse box (after a fuse). You would of course have to put them on a separate switch, which could be mounted in the canopy, but since you occasionally remove the canopy it would be better to fit the switch inside the cab where it remains protected.

Went down to the Ushaka beach last night and tried to catch some shad!!! NO shad in sight ... However I did manage to tag a Kob(390mm) a nice Natal stump (470mm) and believe it or not a cave bass (380mm)!!!!

I have just come back from Sodwana from a weeks work up there! Noticed a couple of nice hiluxes up there but nothing really kitted for fishing ,..... which was disappointing!

Did see a cruiser have to pull a fully loaded condor of people up off the dune at the northern "off ramp" oh and a poor fishing boat flipped in the surf zone...NOT COOL!
