Remote

Post by KZN KZTE »

My KZ-TE I got yesterday has central locking but you have to stick the key in the door lock :(
It came with a remote which the Dealer said is for the immobiliser, but that does nothing so either the battery is flat or could it be that the 2001 model never came with such luxuries as remote c/l?

Another question. Did the 2001 KZ have ABS and/or Airbags or none of the above?
I saw a airbag pic on the dash but it did not light up on ignition so it might be for other models sharing the same dash??

Thanks

my remote on my platkar is also a bit dodgy... you have to keep it close to the wipers, click about 10 - 15 times then it activates the alarm.

Without the red key one has to fit a whole new alarm.
Is there anyway to have a new remote programmed without the red key?

One of my remotes packed up the other day.
The light on the remote came on and the battery was fine.
I had to buy a new remote from Toyota and send the bakkie to them for programming.
Cost was just under R 500 for the remote and programming.
They reckon the remotes only last 5 years or so. :o

You can do a quick test to see if yhe remote is working.Take a digital camera(Your cellphone will do).Put it on camera mode.
Look through the lcd screen at your remote and press the button on remote. on the lcd screen of the camera you will see the IR beam flashing. At least you will know the remote is working. This will only work if the IR eye is located outside the casing like your tv remote.

I stand corrected, but most vehicle remotes don't have an infrared eye....
Does remotes work with infrared? I thought infrared as line of sight???

I have a 2000 KZTE. My remote work on the central locking. And my ABS also works. Best will be to go to Toyota and have them have a look at it. The ABS is located in the left rear side of the bonnet(driver side). Looks like a wiper motor with a square block attached to it and some pipes running from it.

Thanks for that info. If the 2000 model has it then I take it the 2001 is bound to also have it. Will check.

Will also have the remove checked out as the cell phone camera trick cant work as there is no outside bulb visible.

Cheers

Mmm - checked just now and I recon it doesn't have. Also mine has disks front and drums at the back, so I recon no ABS.
Also no "ABS" fuse.

I took some pics and posted them here:

Pierre, only the 4x4 Raiders (of that vintage) had ABS fitted as standard, but not the normal Raised Body Series.

I popped into Toyota Gateway today and after the guy fiddled with the remote behind the small panel next to the steering wheel he told me that I need a new remote as my one is 'full'.
He gave me a "dealer" price of R1300 and said it normally takes about 2 hours as the dash needs to be stripped to get to some main unit.

Wow - if there is no "gippo" trick around getting the remove to work I'd rather just keep using the key in the door lock method.
GggeeeWizzz is this for real!!

Full? Of what? Sounds like a "full of bull" story to me.

Maybe pop in and chat to an auto-electrician. The Toy laaitie (certainly cannot be a mechanic...) seems to have no idea of what he is talking about.

Actually F_D, that fancy merc of yours, does it use the triangular key or still the old square one?
If it is the square one you can count your lucky stars :D as the only problem they had was the bits inside coming loose after time.
The triangular chip key on the other hand, uses a number system that every time you put the key in the ignition it uses up a number (lamans terms  )
This is part of the security system and means that the key cannot be duplicated.

I cannot remember how many numbers it was said to have but I seem to recall 100K or something. I only ever had to replace one key in my time at Merc and that was because the owner had lost his key. The new key has to be programmed to your car and security unit. But in the case of the Merc, it was a matter of putting the key in the ignition, turning it to the 'on' position and waiting 2 hours or so. After that, it would work.

As for the Toyota system, I have no idea  but it is possible that the remote if "full".

Justin, this is a new one to me! I will take a photo of the Merc's key and post it, it is a sort of long triangular one and the security coding makes sense to me. But I wonder whether Toyota used the same system? Never come across this before and surely someone else by now would have reported it too if they had? I don't think that the Hilux electronics is as sophisticated as the Benz, but who knows?

F_D that's the key. It's a smart-key that has a chip in it which has rolling codes. An exerpt I found on a site:

"The RFID chip in the key fob contains a select set of codes designed to work with a given car. These codes are rolling 40-bit strings: With each use, the code changes slightly, creating about 1 trillion possible combinations in total. When you push the unlock button, the keyfob sends a 40-bit code, along with an instruction to unlock the car doors. If the synced-up receiver gets the 40-bit code it is expecting, the vehicle performs the instruction. If not, the car does not respond. "

And another bit of reading : http://newzim.proboards.com/index.cgi?b ... ead=179053

I am not sure if the toyota has the same technology but if it does then it is quite possible that it is "full".
Don't take the 1 trillion possible combinations too literally, but yours will be fine Im sure F_D.
