Spare wheel MIA....
Hi all,
I am pretty sure that this has been discussed to death and apologies if I am starting a new thread for this topic. My spare wheel was repossessed yesterday. I had the strengthened lock and a substantial chain around it, so my question is what is the best way of securing a spare? Apart from a bumper mounted carrier?
Thanks

Re: Spare wheel MIA....
Sorry to hear of your woes, it's very disheartening.
Truth be told, nothing is safe from theses thieves - if they want it they'll take it no matter what they have to break / cut to get it. Even if you put a small discus lock (very hard to break) into the chain so that it can't be turned down, they'll find a way / place to cut the chain. The other thing about locks under there is that they get grit and grime into them and even rust internally, so when the time comes that you need to get the spare out, it becomes a mission (and that's if you haven't lost / misplaced the key). Binding / sealing the lock definitely helps.
The flip side is that if you do nothing, it's an easier target, so everything that you do as a preventative measure is in fact merely a deterrent that might or might not be enough to save your spare on the day.
A further possible "deterrent' is to bolt a steel bracket (to the cross-member that holds the spare) which protrudes through one of the holes in the rim - that protrusion then has a hole that you can put a discus lock through (the hole in the rim must not be big enough to allow the lock to pass through) and the protrusion must be of a nature that cannot be cut with a bolt cutter.
Good luck to us all.

Re: Spare wheel MIA....
What about those pin type locks almost like a gear lock, the lock is mounted on the car and the pin goes through the middle of the wheel.

Re: Spare wheel MIA....
That pin lock was the very first thing I had installed when I took delivery of my Bakkie in January 2006. I literally drove from the dealer to Speedys and had it fitted. My spare has never been stolen.

Re: Spare wheel MIA....
Ja ja Nick S....
Thank you all for the advice, suppose even if it was welded to the chassis it would disappear?
Only replacement (rim) that I can find currently is via Toyota, admittedly I haven't called scrap yards yet. Any other places that I could look at like N1 4X4? Open to suggestions or a private buy.
Cheers

You really shouldn't struggle to get one on OLX, Gumtree etc.

Re: Spare wheel MIA....
It is very quick to discern if this is a wheel thief selling spare wheels or a legitimate seller who has for example changed his rims.

Re: Spare wheel MIA....
Rather go for a steel rim and old bold tyre for a spare - not that attractive for mr thief.
What about stainless bolts to secure the spare?
