4x4 KZ sometimes jump out 1st gear- Sollutions Posted here

I had my synchro's on 1st and 2nd changed by a local gearbox guru. Since then, it is if the 1st gear doesn't always engage properly and jump out of 1st gear when you attempt to pull away. If you take care and properly engage it, it doen't happen. Any-one with a similar experience, or is it possibly only incorrect settings on the selectors?

Hi Hennie,

I suggest take it back to him and let him sort it out. I had Shorty's (4x2 Hilux SWB) 5-speed gearbox over-hauled (it had a terrible whine in 5th) and the local guru renewed all sorts of things while the gearbox was out. That was two years ago and the gearbox is fine, no stickiness or jumping out of gear. No more whining either!

Take it back to the mechanic, any mechanic worth his salt should accept the old addage:

"the customer's always right"

Will have to open up a new jobcard, since the warrantee has expired on the repairs and I have'nt been back to him in the 6 month period. How-ever, I think it could only be either a selector adjustment or a mounting problem. Will have to sort it in December during the break.

took it to toyota and they said nothing to warry about, some spring that is just not lekker.

was just about to post this same question, mine jumps out too!

Any one know of a fix for this... I will ask my guys today, and see if I can post something for you all!

Bruce first start of by checking GB and engine mountings. My problem with second jumping out on snap changes was a broken engine mounting.

I did not diagnose it until it became very bad when the mounting broke right off, but if the mounting is halfway on its way out it may cause the problem. Mine started off happening sometimes and (as the mounting tore further I guess) the problem became worse.

have not had anytime to get the van on a lift yet, but i have been told its gearbox mountings from a few, seems i can hear alittle knock too when going over bumps etc...

anyone know what mountings cost?

Hey, wow not sure what happend here, but I did post a reply!

After some investigation, I was told that this is common on the Toyotas and nothing to worry about. Not everyone will experience this but it seems that the rubber that goes around the gear lever gets in the way sometimes when engaging 1st causing the gear not to go in properly and with acceleration the gear pops out! the only fix is to either cut the rubber which is not recommended or to make sure you put the 1st gear in RIGHT the 1st time hehe

It is not gearbox releated so you dont need to open up the box to find the problem! I have spoken to my Mechies! Toyota Mechies and other fellow Toyota owners who have had this!

Bruce my problem was also the rubber being in te way causing it not to go into gear properly, but the casue of this was due to the gearbox allignment because of a faulty engine mounting. Is all your mountings OK (engine and gearbox) no one of them misformed or mounting brakets maybe bent that makes the gearboks to sit out of allignement ever so slightly?

I was also told by the guy who did my origional conversion that it is the rubber and that he had to make the hole in the floor bigger, but when I asked him why this problem was not there since day 1 he could not answer me. I then declined the bigger hole idea. Then eventually when I pulled the motor and found the broken mounting everything stated to make sence.

Thanks Bennie and others for sharing your knowledge and experience. I don't have a KZ any more, but seeing that this is a common problem, lets keep on hearing from those who knows!!

I have referred a guy from the 4x4Comm here and hopefully he will see the benefit to join here and share his experience with us.

We checked all mountings on my van and nothing broken, spoke to the others and they dont seem to have any broken mountings either, but its good to know as it is a good starting point!

The "dogs" in the gearbox are worn. The selector forks also have nylon tipped pressure fingers. The Prado and the Hilux uses the same gearbox. I changed the selector rings and the forks and my box was fine.

Changed the "dogs" and the selector rings on the LC gearbox to get it sorted

My KZ-TE also jumped out of first gear. After reading all the forums on what is could be we checked the engine and gearbox brackets, all good. Took out the gearbox and send it to the guru's. They replaced the bearings, seals and and a bush. We put the gearbox back and still popped out of first gear. The guru's said we should send the whole bakkie to them so they can investigate. They checked everything and couldn't find anything wrong. Then as a last resort replaced the first gear, the old and new gear looked exactly the same. But the problem was fixed.

For someone having the same issue.

I had this problem on my 2.7
There is a bush that the ball of the gearlever sits in.
When this bush is worn or disintegrated it jumps out of first gear.
The agents dont supply the bush only (go figure), they only supply the whole gearlever assembly.
Alan (Hoppy) supplies these bushes.
