RAV4 Towbar

Re: RAV4 Towbar
Bester ek het die removable Toyota model
Sluit in plek met n slot
Nog vas en geen rattles.
Sien geen voordeel bo die Bosal.
Slegs vir die waarborg by Toy gebly

Some quick pics ....
With the high position of the number plate the towbar might as well remain in place -
side view -
from the other side -
As with most towbars, just a long bar hidden behind the bumper, and attached to the chassis "rails" on each side of the vehicle -
The other side the bolts are more hidden by the exhaust pipe.
The identification plate -
Apparently the wiring is done in such a manner that the computer knows when you are towing, and a "trailer stability" mode is activated as part of the vehicle stability program. Would love to know the real facts of this ... would a home wire job work ?

Re: RAV4 Towbar
Chris having seen what it takes to fit the new REVO towbar with wiring its not just merely a case of DIY wiring.ChrisF wrote:Apparently the wiring is done in such a manner that the computer knows when you are towing, and a "trailer stability" mode is activated as part of the vehicle stability program. Even the RAV has more than one plug that needs to connected in order for the vehicle to see the trailer and all of them has some module also as part of the towbar wiring.
For peace of mind I would rather have it installed and know they are accountable when something do go wrong.

Re: RAV4 Towbar
Johan exactly why I included the towbar in the original sale - supplied and fitted by Toyota.
ONE stop if something goes wrong.
sadly that does mean you take it back because they fitted the wrong cruise control ....
and you take it back again because they did not refit all the panels inside the boot after fitting the towbar ...
but we rest in piece(s) since the highly skilled Toyota trained "Technicians" worked on the car .....
frustrations aside, yes gone are the days when one fitted these at home.

Re: RAV4 Towbar
Thanks for the info / photos. I think best would probably be to go with Toyota, for "just in case".
As a matter of interest, any idea what the Thule tow bar costs?

Re: RAV4 Towbar
Jan it is the 2016 model RAV4, petrol model.
It is a Toyota cruise control. Exact same as in the owners manual, as fitted to the more expensive models. Even shows on the dash board when you activate it.

Re: RAV4 Towbar
New Rav cruise control is basically plug and play. Short harnes and clutch switch if manual . With the switch wiring and steering control should cost less than R2500. Labour should not take more than 1hour. How did they get to over R6000

Re: RAV4 Towbar
was just over R5k in 2010 - generic plug and play in the Hilux
By 2013 it was R5,5k for the exact same generic plug and play in the Etios.
Mind you these generic units even offer two programmable preset speeds, ie your cruising speed and lets say 65km/h for when you enter a town.
The current R6k price tag is exactly as per the Toyota SA extras price list, no extra profit and no extra discount.
That said - YES, as per normal the mark-up is insane ....
