It will give you many happy kilometers. Mine is a few kilos short of 350 000.etiennel22 wrote:What is wrong with a KZTE?

Seriously thou
Head replaced on 235 000km with a few normal maintenance thingies, but I think the biggest gamble is that you don't know how it was looked after (bought mine on 160 000km)

I also have a KZTE, and the clock just hit the 200k mark. Still running like a dream.louis fourie wrote:It will give you many happy kilometers. Mine is a few kilos short of 350 000.etiennel22 wrote:What is wrong with a KZTE?

Re: 2000 + KZTE
The KZte's biggest problem is the cylinderhead that goes. If you can live with a peplacement cost of around R18k then go for it
Have two at the shop, had four but two died, anyway the two left both have plus 600k km but 8 cylheads between then. One we have chiped and detuned slightly in attemp to make head last longer.
You counts yours pennies and makes yours choices, ja!

Re: 2000 + KZTE
The KZ topic has been discussed to death on this and other forums.
The head WILL go...save up for it if you are buying one...and if you have one, save up for it.

Re: 2000 + KZTE
i thought if you replace it with aftermarket (think it AMC head) then you actaully solve the problem?

Re: 2000 + KZTE
265k happy kms on my KZ and I have not replaced the head yet.
I am pretty sure it depends on the driving style but I am no expert.
Yes, I guess, there is a chance it will go if it so many people are replacing heads, but what is the real percentage, who knows.
My issue is fuel consumption... it is not a frugal diesel engine.

311k km and still going strong.
Previous owner replaced head. Mistreated it too. 4xlux gave it some TLC.
Put in a 74 deg C thermostat (the 2004-2005 came with it as standard AFAIK), a egt gauge and intercooler. No more worries.

Hoppy has posted about this - he DID take care of the vehicle, and still the head went ....Derren wrote:265k happy kms on my KZ and I have not replaced the head yet.

Neighbour had the KZTE head replaced a year back .... now all the symptoms are back ! Due to go back to have it checked out .. HOPING it is only a topgasket. As a former Range Rover owner he lets me hear all about the crap Toyota reliability .....
but as I said on another thread - replacing the KZTE head is still cheaper than a set of injectors on the newer D4D .....
betaal gaan jy betaal .... so koop sommer die V6 en WEET waarvoor jy betaal

was having this discussion with SWAMBO over the weekend.ChrisF wrote:

I really smaak a d4d, but the suzie not doing too badly in the consumption and performance areas. COuld do with a bit more oomph up sir lowry pass with fully loaded venter trailer and bak over the holidays, but otherwise OK.
But there is always the worry in back of my mind, what if this engine goes (any diesel engine not just suzie). You never know if the pervious owner took care of it. Even with FSH... many a post on threads about diesel owners wanting to do 140. Suzie laying at 2800 rpm at 120 and i still think this is pushing it. at about 110 it doing 2500.
Was actually looking for a d4d where the engine has gone, get it for a good price and fix up engine. Price will probably come out to current market price but at least i know i have a good solid engine.
Or Just go for V6, pay at the pumps, but 5000 rpm up any dune no worries. And since we only drive the bakkie once in while, it not going to break the bank compared to diesel overhaul.
But i do love the laid back low revving diesel engine on the open road.
