Future Hilux owner and new member

Post by Shumba138 »

Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to this forum :celebrate: and never owned an Hilux before. I used to drive a Defender in Zim ( :surrender: please don't throw stones at me) that I really enjoyed but I'm now moving to SA for 2 years and I'm looking for a more confortable car to spend more time on the road.
From what I read, an Hilux double cab seems to be the best option. So I'm looking for one in the Gauging area.
Ideally, I'm looking for one already equipped for camping (aluminium canopy, dual battery system, drawers, roof rack, long range tank, water tank, roof top tent...) but I know these might be hard to find...
So if you know someone selling this type of car, can you please let me know?

From what I saw on your "Which Hilux to choose? "page, I should go for an IFS one (from 1998 to 2005), as I plan to drive on the road quite a lot to visit the country, but also do some bundu bashing from time to time, and speed is not a real issue. I'm doing a lot of photography, and will most probably be travelling through Namibia and Botswana again, so I'm looking for a 4X4 that can take me to remote places and back safely. I will also be spending a lot of time driving in the sand, as I'll be working next to the Kalahari transfrontier NP.
What I'm not so sure about is should I go for a diesel or a petrol one?? Coming from France, we tend to avoid petrol car, because petrol is very expensive here, but might not be the same in SA? On this forum I also found some advices saying that if you buy a used car you should go for a petrol one (2.7i Raider), as the engin is lees finicky that the diesel one (3.0 KZ-TE). Let's say I buy a diesel with about 250 000km on the clock, is it worth the risk?
Another question, is the 3.0 d-4d diesel the same engine as the 3.0 KZ-TE??

Cheers!
Steph

Hi and welcome Steph!

Hmmm ...... the diesel vs petrol debate, you'll get some differing opinions but I'll stick my neck out and say this - in some of the remote areas you might on the very odd occasion find a shortage of petrol, whereas diesel is normally always available, but dirty diesel can leave you stranded - the 3.0D4D is not the same motor as the 3.0KZ. When you buy 2nd hand, you never know how well or how badly a vehicle has been treated before and with diesels it can lead to some expensive repairs (cylinder head and injector replacement) - the 2.7i petrol motor is renowned for it's reliability and long service, but they are thirsty motors (diesel is generally much more economical in respect of fuel consumption).

Wait to hear what other comments are made. Good luck with your final choice. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Thank you all for your warm welcome an replies.
In terms of price, let's say I'm looking at around R130,000 for the vehicle only, and obviously more depending on how it is kitted for overloading.
The D4D is the engine used in newer models (after 2005) right?

1999 to 2005 = 2.7 I and 3.0 KZTE
2005 to current = 3.0 D4D and 4.0 V6 and 2.7 VVTI (2x4)

Welcome to the Forum...

You may struggle in your price range to get a kitted D-4D...
Most likely vehicle in that price range will be the 2700 Petrol Hilux which has a very good engine, but a little thirsty...

Welcome to the Forum and the Hilux Family. Looking at your requirements and budget........I would think the 2.7 IFS is the one. Diesel is lighter on Fuel, but petrol has lower maintenance and drives better on sand.

Howzit and welcome Stephanie.Another option not mentioned in the replies, is the 2,5 d4d diesel which also has a bullet proof engine and came out in 2005 and is still currently installed in the hiluxes and fortuners. I purchased one last year well within your said budget and am very happy with it.Fuel consumption is also great at about 10 km per litre on the open road.Happy hunting.

Well, firstly, it's a pleasure Stephanie ;-) ..... but then we're also morally obligated to help because otherwise you'd be walking about in Africa with rucksacks and pulling a sled - and you'd tell all your friends how it's all because we didn't help!  :D: ;-)

Welcome to our neck of the hood. For your intended appreciatapplication the KZ-TE could be a great buy in that price tag, problem being finding one that was looked after. Now and then the guys sell here too, good luck. If you do go for D-4D then look into fitting another diesel filter as they're sensitive to dirty diesel and I believe those injectors cost can arm and a leg.
